Incredibly Slow...

Can someone do me a favour and have a gander at this HJT log, it is from a colleagues computer...the main complaint...it is painfully slow (I can attest to this!!!!).
It might just need a dose of memory and cleaning up some of the superfluous software (eg Yahoo, google and Imesh toolbars) but I would appreciate knowing if there are any greebles lurking.

Hi quirkymac

First download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program

1. Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
2. Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
3. On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
   • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
4. Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
5. Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine ".
6. Under "Reports "
   • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan "
   • Un-Select "Only if threats were found "

Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

1. Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
   IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
2. Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
3. Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan ".
4. AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
   Once the scan is complete do the following:
5. If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions "
6. Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
7. Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
8. Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the AVG Anti-Spyware report scan.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Close HJT.

Reboot into safe mode.
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (If they will not remove in safe mode, do so in normal mode)(if present):

mywebsearch

Please note any other programs that you dont recognize in that list in your next response

Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore "), please delete these folders (if present):

After that, Reboot.

Houston we have a problem

Much as I would love to do as you instruct I am unable to comply.

This computer already appears to have AVG installed and is now up to date VG ver. 7.5.446 it is currently running a full scan but the problem is....

I cannot get the computer to run in safe mode. On my monitor it comes up saying 'Unable to display this mode' I have tried a 2nd monitor which came up with the same result....

Am I wasting my time running the scan in Normal windows mode?

Are you sure it is AVG Anti-Spyware?
I don't see it in your log.

Here is another way to get into safe mode, Print or save this to your desk top so you can refer back to it.
* Close all open programs.
* Click Start, Run and type MSCONFIG in the box and click OK
* The System Configuration Utility appears, On the BOOT.INI tab, Check the "/SAFEBOOT" option, and then click OK and Restart your computer when prompted.
* The computer restarts in Safe mode.
* Perform the troubleshooting steps for which you are using Safe Mode.
When you are finished with troubleshooting in Safe mode, open MSCONFIG again, on the BOOT.INI tab, uncheck "/SAFEBOOT" and click OK to restart your computer

Then start at step 2 to run AVG.
If you can not get a scan then we will run a different scanner.

Let me know what happens.

Will load the trial of AVG anti SPYWARE and try again via the method you suggested.

oops....I did that AVG report before I quarantined the items.... rest assured they were all either deleted or quarantined.

I note a slight improvement on speed but still not what it should be.

For example if I click either internet explorer or My computer from a settled desktop (eg after WinXP has loaded and calmed down) it still takes between 2-3 minutes for the next window to load....certainly not what you expect on a P4 2.4G. I know that they are running very light on memory (on;y 256M) and I will be suggesting a big memory injection. But it still shouldn't be this slow.
I will also run a thorough defrag over the HDD and set it up to be done regularly. But I still have a feeling there is something lurking...

Also you can delete AVG Anti-Spyware, even though it is a good program the backround scanner can slow down your machine.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.

1. Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
   
   
2. AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
   
   
3. SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
   
   
4. SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
   
   
5. IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all,
   and MVPS Hosts File will accomplish a similar tactic and provide another layer of protection.
   
   
6. Install WinPatrol to prevent unknown applications from being inserted to start up on your machine
   
   Now just because you have security apps installed, they are useless unless updated regularly.
   
   
7. Another thing I would suggest, is to install SiteAdvisor. It gives sites a few different 'ratings' and while not fool proof, a good additional layer of information about many sites.
   
   
8. ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
   This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only, Cleans out temporary files all the garbage you collect while surfing the web.
   
   
9. Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
   
   
10. Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
    
11. Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

Have followed your advice....thank you!

I had a look at your sig and followed it to etrust's online scanner which detected (but could not fix or delete) 2 files with the shinwow.bh java infection.

Any advice?

Your Java is not that out of date.

Everything I found on this is Old info.

Just to be safe you can update Java and clean out the Cache.

Here is how.

Updating Java and Clearing Cache

1. Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Java Icon (coffee cup) in the Control Panel.
2. It will say "Java Plug-in" under the icon.
   Please find the update button or tab in the Java Control Panel. Update your Java then reboot.
3. If you are unable to update you can manually update by going here:
   • 
     http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
4. After the reboot, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
5. Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
6. There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 Checked
   • 
     Downloaded Applets
     Downloaded Applications
     Other Files
7. Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
   Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
8. Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
