How do I increase the size of my primary partition? I currently have on drive C 4.61 GB cap. w/ 608 MB of free space. It is the system drive. Drive D has 4.88 GB cap. w/ 4.80 GB free and I have 9.13 GB unallocated. I also get a caution window after start-up saying "system back-up disk not found ". How do I fix that too?
Thanks in advance for any help with this.

you would need a program like Partition Magic to reallocate space on your drive although there may be other programs that will work also.

PM is an excellent tool to do the job, as Chuck has suggested.

In the mean time, to work around the problem, reduce the size of your paging file and disable Hibernate. Also limit the space reserved for System Restore.

PM can be had for around $20 if you shop around. I wouldn't be without it.

    TKC2000 - Welcome to the Board :)
Have you used the backup facility in XP - possibly to an external HD?

One way to increase the space is to convert C: to a dynamic disk - assuming you're using XP Pro:
Right click "My computer ", choose "Manage ", pick "Disk management" from the left pane, right click disk0, click Convert to dynamic disk and follow the wizard.

    Hi TKC2000,

As you have described yourself as a beginner and not knowing or willing to assume that you will not "jump in with both feet before looking first" or "thoroughly understanding any procedure that has a potential for destruction or loss of any current data existing on harddrive ". Articles such as the following (link) may help a bit.

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q309044

Not knowing you personally and having seen some users on public boards "crying" on a return to a board, after literally trying a procedure verbatim, per "instructions ", that resulted in the loss of data. I'm just trying to make sure that you do your homework before trying any suggestion that may come up in this post. In many cases these are not nondestructive procedures. Just call me a "worry wort" but I had to tack this warning in here being concerned for you, as a self described "Beginner ".

I am using XP Home Edition, not Pro. The computer is a laptop. Sorry for not specifying this earlier.
