I have now upgraded from Netscape V.7.1 to 7.2. Created a new profile, a new user.js file.... and imported and copied my bookmarks, passwords, and mail. Everthing is finally working flawless so far, except that now....

I belong to some Yahoo graphics groups when send out PSP graphics, to group members, such as Jasc program file images, like psptube, pspframe, pspimage, and also jpgs, and gifs. The jpg and gif files show up as the correct icons but NONE of the PSP images, tubes, etc. show up correctly. They all have the darn generic WINDOWS type icon as their icon. My PSP program is associated with all the PSP files and my gif and jpg files are associated with my ACDSee. So, why do the jpg, and gif icons show up correctly on the images and the PSP icons do not for the graphics I receive through e-mail. Also, the ZIP files show up as a windows icon also when downloading a zip file as do RAR files when downloading them also.

HELP !!! How do you set Netscape 7.2 to show the correct icons for each image and\or file? Where is the setting stored at in Netscape? Some examples of how to set *Helper* assocations in Netscape would be appreciated also.

    TIA,
    Vanilla Ice

I don't understand what you want. Netscape has nothing to do with other applications. Where do you see these icons? If you see them on the desktop, it is a Windows problem.
Helper association wil help you to direct to the proper program. You would have icons there, but it does not matter. NS7.2 can care of itself.

Hi Westside, Maybe not on your system, but on mine and using V.7.2 clean install Yes, Netscape does have something to do with how the icons are displayed on those particular Jasc Paintshop Pro images, when they come in as an attachment. PSPImage and PSPTube files show up with the *generic* lookiing Windows icons(like the icons that represent dat.files etc. instead of the program icons they have in PSP.

But, when the same type of attachments come thru Outlook Express, on the same OS (if I use that mail client)they show the *correct icons* for PSPImage and PSPTube files. I probably need to set or change something in my Prefs but I am not sure what. Anyway, I can still use my version 7.1 until I can get that problem with the icons straighened out.

Sorry, if I confused you with my previous post, but I still have the problem with the generic windows icon showing up in attachemnts that come in through the Netscape Mail client.

P.S. Where is the moderator Ramona...I am used to seeing her here and miss her expert answers, advice and solutions about Netscape.

Peace for all the World, in the New Year.

As for Ramona, take a look at this thread .
As for icons, it is important to not allow Netscape to become default for application that it is not made for. You can see this in: Edit|Prefs|Advanced|System. It is ok to let handle HTML, or http, but definitely not the image file. Actually, your applications do not work, well or at all , if it is allowed to take over. That is, probably, what happened to you. You have to make sure that the program (other than Netscape) is set as default. You can also check the windows file association. You don't need Helper Associations if everything is set properly. But, I found items there which I never entered. The icons are irrelevant, but they may indicate a possible problem.
As for your attachments, it does not matter until you decide you download the files. I don't see many attachments in my mail, but a .gif, jpg or .bmp file will have an Irfanview (my viewer program) icon.

    Vanilla Ice,

Netscape 7.2 uses the Windows' File Types. As Westside advised, you shouldn't have to do anything in the Netscape Helper Applications if you have set your php viewer as the default application to be used for the php and tub file types.

To change the icon, this is done in Windows Explorer. Open Explorer, and click on:
View | Folder Options | File Types

Highlight the default program for the file types in question.
    Click on Edit
In the Edit File Type window, click on: Change Icon
You will be shown the program icons, and can make your selection there.

Let us know if you continue to have problems.

BTW, I'm assuming that you can open these files, and it is only the incorrect icon that makes you crazy?

    Have a Happy New Year,

    Ramona

Thank you Westside and Ramona. Westside, the settings in my 7.2 prefs are set in the -Advanced-System tab to NOT use Netscpape to open any jpg, gif, png, etc images. The only one that IS CHECKED is the http one. That is correct, isn't that how you said it should be in your reply. If so, then, I have that much right so far.

Hey, Ramona, glad you are feeling better, hope your Christmas was a nice one even with being a bit 'under the weather'. About the icons, yeah, I can save the attachment graphic files, just fine, and then open them wih PSP without a problem so,. You are right, it is only the incorrect icon (windows generic) that Netscape 7.2 displays when they come in through email that drives me bonkers....BTW, I checked my Jasc Paintshop Pro program and it is set as the DEFAULT program for all PSP graphics files... in fact, it uses all the default settings. I do not change that programs settings much at all. *shrugs* So, have no idea why the generic windows icons are showing up in V.7.2. Did the file types thingie that you suggested also, and PSP is set there for the correct icons display for PSP. Me thinks, they should come through V. 7.2 email with the PSP icons but they don't for whatever reasons. But, heck, I can live with that problem, by using Netscape V.7.1 for now. It displays all image attachments that I receive through email correctly.Maybe the new version will eventually work itself out and show the Psp icons for attachements. in a few weeks, if not then I will bump it off my machine. :)

    Happy New Year,
    Peace,
    Vanilla

    Vanilla,
Happy New Year to you, and it may bring you all the correct icons.
I can think of all one thing, since, most likely you are using the same profile for 7.1 and 7.2, would be a different profile for 7.2. And, you can keep both programs on your computer, as long as they are in different directories.
The only inconvenience would be to copy the key files from one profile to the other.
