Have a clients machine that when she called was telling me the machine would not turn on. No power to the supply. She also told me that when this first happened they noticed a burning smell from the machine and thats when they turned it off. Naturally cuz the power supply wasnt working had to try that first. Now with a new power supply the turn on is inconsistant. No consistancy to when it will turn on appears like when it cools off for a minute or two it comes back on.

Have done the swapping of memory, reciding all connections, disconnected everything to see if error beeps happen they do not. No post codes at all even when the supply turns on. No visual signs on board of a burnt situation. Monitor never gets a signal that power is on. Processor fan runs okay, have recided processor.

Any ideas ??? Am leaning to a processor or bad board but not sure. Light on board does come on so power is getting to the board.

    Help....

Much better chance that its the board unless the machine is rather - less than 60 days - new. Most processors either work forever or fail pretty early in their life from a timing perspective. I'll assume you already tested some alternative memory and made sure you weren't too aggressive with your memory timings if you did the initial setup.

Yep, replaced the memory with the exact pcxxx and mb as was the old memory.

Have unplugged everything one at a time to see if a device was causing the problem. No luck power still does not come on consistantly. Hit and miss and no rhyme or reason as why it turns on or doesnt.

after a closer look at the power supply it looks like they sent me the wrong one. one they sent is a 90w and the one that went bad is 145w. could be the problem here now is the one sent is not enough to keep the machine powered. what a week.
