I'm trying to help my brother out with a problem. He's using OE6 and isn't receiving incoming messages. I'm receiving his messages, but when I reply, nothing shows up in his inbox. He contacted his provider and they said the messages are on their server...they're just not getting through. We've gone over all settings and are exactly the same as mine (except, naturally, his service provider info). Obviously, something in his settings isn't right and probably something we've overlooked. If anyone can suggest particular OE settings to check, we'd certainly appreciate it.

    Thanks..

    1. Has he received mail before?
    2. Did this just start?
    3. Any error messages when clicking send/receive?
    4. Has he installed any programs lately?
    5. Has he tried repairing OE? (part of IE, control panel, add/remove programs, highlight IE, click add/remove, select repair)
    6. MS has a OE troubleshooter at their site.
    7. You might try removing the mail account, and creating a new one.
    Post back good or bad.

(BTW, if I wasnt using Hotmail as my primary address, I would be using some other email program, ie. Pegasus, Eudora etc)

    Re: aleekat

    Thanks for your input.......

    1. Has he received mail before?
Not on this particular system. He's renting it and hasn't been able to receive e-mail from the start.

    2. Did this just start?
No, he's never been able to receive e-mail on the current system.

    3. Any error messages when clicking send/receive?
    No.

    4. Has he installed any programs lately?
I believe he downloaded and installed IE&OE 6 himself.

    5. Has he tried repairing OE? (part of IE, control panel, add/remove programs, highlight IE, click add/remove, select repair)
Yes, we went through thet last night and didn't help.

    6. MS has a OE troubleshooter at their site.
He's been all through the OE troubleshooter!

    7. You might try removing the mail account, and creating a new one. Post back good or bad.
He's done that with no luck.

As I said, I'm receiving messages from him with no problem. We've gone over and over his settings to make sure they match mine (since we're running basically the same OS (Win 98SE) and programs. His system has McAffee on it, but I can't see how that would prevent him from receiving e-mail. He's tried disabling McAffee, but didn't help. The only thing I can think of at this point is there may be a problem with his service provider. Naturally, he's already contacted them and they swear there's nothing wrong on their end. He's also contacted the rental place, but as expected, those guys know absoultely nothing. I may suggest downloading a different mail client just as a test. This is the third system he's had from the rental place, doesn't have the $ to get a new system right now, the rental place has no more systems at this time,.....so he's trying desperately to get this one to accept e-mail and has now become a challenge more than anything.

    Stumped.....

This seems unlikely, but have you checked to see whether there is a rule "For All Messages" - "Do Not Download From Server "?

Is OE actually establishing a connection when the "Receive" button is hit?

    Are any error messages appearing?

    Can he send e-mails?

One way to check if its his server or computer. Since your email program works, set up his identity in your OE, as a new mail account. Then send some mail to him, and see if your computer can retrieve it. If so, then its his computer, if not, then I would guess the server. ISPs are notorious for blaming your computer, never themselves. Post back good or bad.

Also check, under tools, accounts, properties, servers, incoming/out going mail server, maybe a typo?

    DCannon,

I'm curious, who exactly does your brother use as his ISP? Knowing this would probably be helpful before some of us could "suggest particular OE settings to check."

    Want To Help,

    To all who have replied.....

I finally decided to get in touch with my service provider today and they contacted the sysadmin at my brother's provider (ocsonline.com) in Dalton, GA. I received a forwarded reply that the matter would be looked into and all parties would be informed by ocsonline.com. Bottom line is the problem wasn't on my brother's end. ocsonline.com had done some maintenance and inadvertantly somehow froze his incoming e-mail, along with several others. The problem has been resolved and everything is working properly. Obviously, the first person my brother spoke to....who said "nothing was wrong on their end "......didn't want to bother with it. Thankfully, my service provider takes things like this more seriously.

My thanks to all who took the time to reply.
