Opening up Inbox told have 10 new messages, in fact only have 3 (!)....

In starting up a New Message informed there is a new Message; Inbox has no trace.....

This anomaly is very recent...would be grateful for any comments on the "glitch "..

 

Do you have any Rules which could cause the mails to be deleted?

By Rules do i presume this is the Block Messages Rules (useful!)? Certainly several junk mail ads have been put in Block Messages, but wonder why this misnumbering incoming Mail should happen all of a sudden.
Maybe a Cable server problem?

Looking at your post again, it's probably unlikely that a Rule is to blame (if the mails are deleted, they shouldn't show as being in the inbox). Look here.
