I am running windows xp, ie 6. I have a free pop up stopper and I have my ie content configured to prevent inappropriate language and visuals. I'm noticing alot of ads popping up about "want a bigger ***** ". When you click close, another window pops up and it's worse than the first one. My young kids are on this computer. Please advise what else I can do besides not permit my kids on the computer. Thank you.:(

    This may be of Interest

    Hi

Sounds like it is the 'messenger service' ( not M$ meesenger ) but a new form of Spam ......

To disable messenger service go here :

    Messenger Service

I have had 2 of these before I got my Firewall installed. I have always had the Firewall on my laptop thus have not had any pop up ads. I was having problems with my DT and did not have the Firewall installed when I got the messages.

I now have my Firewall - to date no message ads.

    TCP ports : 135, 139, 145
    UDP : 135, 137,138

Anything netBIOS related especially the above ports.

If you go to deja news - search ' Messenger service ' you will find a lot of others with the same problems.

As you have kids you may seriously consider a Firewall of soemthing like cyberPatrol.

Hope this helps. It is horrible to be faced with things like this :(

I am running mcafee guardian and virus protection. I have the free edition of pop up stopper. I'm not sure what you mean by the messenger. My kids do have aol instant messenger. I'll check out what you said in your post, but please clarify what you mean by the messenger. Thank you.

    Messenger

    Hi

I was not aware of this either. I had a tech. at my house & he told me that this pop-up ad. thing had just started to appear on his PC - he told me it was ' Messenger service ' thus searched on this.

It is pop-up advertsing - they use a messenger service to pop the ads on your PC i.e. when connected to the Internet "they?" detect your PC & send the ad. ( as in your case less than suitable for minors ) or anyone elses !

They use open ports on the PC which may be open on yours as the kids use AOL messenger ( I really don't know anything about AOL ) BUT these pop-ups are not from them. Whoever is sending them must be using the port ????????

There has been a LOT of people complaining about this - one person even got them on his Windows 2000 server machine which does not have any messenger programs installed. This has caused him to delve deeper into the matter as it is a very new & worrying form of spam. He adds that every version of Windows hasa network function that allows you to send messsages from one PC to another opening in a ' messenger service ' window on the target PC's desktop. The Internet is one giant network thus the problem ..........

I am not sure about your McAfee - if it has a Firewall then you can block ports from there. If it is just configured to protect the kids from certain sites - I don't think this would block PC ports. The Anti Virus part would not stop these messages ( as yet ! )

I have Norton Internet Security which blocks the ports on my PC & alerts me as to possible attacks but does not let them in. He stealths unused ports too thus any attack would be alerted.

Hope this helps. I know the tech. is still getting them as I spoke to him today. I have used both my desktop & laptop today without any pop-up messages.

Sorry this is long but I wanted to include as much info. that I know. I am sure there are others who know a lot more than me !!!

    Hey Phyllis,

If you could, the next time you are at a site that gives you the popup, could you post the link here? I would like to go there and see if I get the popup with my configuration. I have PopUPStopper free and I use IEspyad, and spywareblaster. I never get these popups and wonder if I have it beat or I'm not going to the right sites for it.

    Thanks:)

I don't have PopUPStopper, but I do have IESpyad and Spywareblaster, both of which are free and which I update if required daily, and I never get pop ups either. As far as I can see, I have them beat, using these two programs.

Sometimes, even if you disable pop ups thru administrative tools in the control panel you still continue to get pop up messages from strangers.

To recieve messages on MSN from the contacts that have you on your list only go to Tools --> Options --> Privacy.

Theres 2 rectangular boxes with the 2 buttons between them.

In the left hand side box, at the top of the list, there is an All other users name. If you click on that, then click "Block >>" you then can only recieve messages from people that you have on your list.

    Hope this helps.

I don't have any 3rd party "pop-up" stopper software either and:

    1. Hardly ever get a pop-up / under ad
    2. Don't get any messenger pop-ups
      [/list=1]

      How? My settings.

      Here's how I got IE configured: http://www.windows-help.net/features/surf-safe.html

I have a firewall, and have blocked port 445 (UDP/TCP), which seems to have 'killed' the messenger spams.

    INAPPROPRIATE POP UPS

The web address is advert american singles and albionmedical.com. After the postings I received here, I was able to get the id address and put it into mcafee to block them. The addresses are 64.70.32.61 and 64.89.19.223. You have to go to a dos screen and ping the web address to get the id number.

    Hi

Thanks for posting the links. Which level do you set for IE - default ~ Medium or High. I am never quite sure which to use.

I know I have a firewall which protects browsing also but if I have IE6's setting too low it leaves a hole which I do not know about.

I would be grateful for your advice on this one, please. I have only had 2 of the pop-ups when my PC was being set up with XP for me. When I got it back the 2 ads. appeared but once I had my firewall installed I have not had any more. Let's hope it remains this way. Totally horrible for this to spoil the vast resource we have online :(

I went to the sites. The first one gave me no popup. The second site went to the " Do you want a large....." When I closed it I got a stopped popup. My Popup Stopper is working good on that site.

Do you have the latest stopper? The new one has a hand in the systray instead of the square one.

Custom. If you make the changes I outlined in that document, IE will be set to Custom.

Here is a pop-up killer I use that works better that any other that I tried. It is called EMS Free Surfer mk II and is 100% freeware. There is absolutely no adware attached to it either.

Make sure you choose the link for the freeware version. They also sell a version which has more to it, but the freeware version works great!

You can even turn on/off Flash and Animated Gifs.

I am running Win98 SE and IE 6, every time I start IE my homepage starts to load and when it is loaded halfway the pop up that has an address of www.topsearcher.com/dir.php takes over , It is a fullscreen page and the only way to get rid of it is to press Ctrl/Alt/Delete and close down IE, then it does not come back again until reboot, I have been to the homepage www.topsearcher.com but there is no way of contacting them, It is my guess that it is something my boy has allowed to download without knowing it, how can I get rid of it as my pop up stopper will not stop it either?

aussiejohn, this is what you need, SpyBot Search & Destroy. Also go to Spyware/Hijacked and get the IEpsyads file. It will put a number of sites known to do this to you into the Restricted Sites Zone of IE. Follow the instructions about customizing the Restricted Zone and these sites will not be able to put so much as a cookie on you.

Marcp62 I noticed that IEspyad blocks the use of cookies, but will that stop me accessing sites such as my Internet Banking which requires cookies?

No. It would only affect the cookies coming from the sites in the Restricted Zone. That is a well thought out and researched file, others here would recommend it. All other sites will be allowed. Hopefully, your Internet Banking is not one of them. I doubt it is.

By the way, after installing the file, click Yes to Merge to do so, and you set the Restricted Zone correctly, and if you ever get the message concerning Activex controls are disabled and the web page may not display properly, that is one of those sites trying to put something on you, such as the Topsearcher, and are stopped. Just click OK and not worry.
Although you may not be on their site, some pages reference those sites in the web page code. That is called drive-by install.
