This is my first dealing with hijack "“ so be gentle…

Vista Ultimate machine. (friends pc "“ had no AV software "“ only used zone alarm paid version)

Can’t launch anything in regular mode. Clicking on IE icon for example:

Windows can not access the specific device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the item.

Safe mode with internet access no workee. Was able to install MalWarebytes and Avira in safe mode. Hijack no workee in regular mode due to the above error message.

Lets see if any rootkit activity is present first. Download GMER

Right click and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Open the program and click on the Rootkit tab.
Make sure all the boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for "˜Show All’.
    Click on Scan.
When the scan has completed, click Copy and paste the results (if any) into this topic.

gmer log looks fine. Lets see if DDS shows any Vundo still lurking. Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
    • Disable any script blocking protection
    • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
    • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
      1. DDS.txt
      2. Attach.txt
    • Save both reports to your desktop.
Please include the contents of the following in your next reply:

    DDS.txt

I may ask for the Attach.txt log later, so keep it handy.

    Steve,

I don't see any Vundo files but something definitely odd about these files.

Any chance you can get some samples uploaded to my submission channel for analysis?

Rarely suggest it, but have you tried a system restore (preferably one prior to 12-13)?

Ahhh .... those system restores might be what created the odd files. If the system was rolled back to lets say 11-30 on 12-16, then 12-17 should be a viable restore point as well. If your friend had been doing this for several weeks, you might find there are some good ones left, just dated differently than you would expect.

    Ughhh :(

Maybe your friend will seek help sooner next time (if there is a next time) instead of running system restore and trudging on. Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance.
