Windows Vista ["Inactive" desktop icons]

    sorry to bother, searched faq's to no avial:
    o/s windows vista home premium service pack 2 -32 bit.

    why have my desktop icons suddenly become inactive, or more to the point, how do i re-active'em ? (i can still use desktop list from taskbar so it's not a huge inconvenience)
