Hi everyone, first time user so if i did anything wrong forgive me. Unsure on how to classify my problem.

I am currently running windows XP
    1 ghz processor AMD athlon
    Ks750 series motherboard
Aol was most recent, until i uninstalled it
IE 6 is currently the most recent

My problem first occurred when I was using AOL' s dial service and IE6 as my browser. I have been using my computer for about 7 months and i have had no problems. I was connected to aol and IE when the power went out. Since then i am unable to connect to any website through any form of browser. I am able to connect to aol's network but not to the www. Recently i have upgraded my connection to cable. The problem still exists, I was hoping since it was modular i would not have the problem still. i can ping addresses ( i am getting four replies when i do). I noticed that in the browser when the page is being searched for it says for ex., www.www.yahoo.com.org and it is switching between .net and .edu with .org. When it is done searching an error appears saying internet explorer could not open the search page. I can still search through harddrive when using IE. When i searched for hosts and opened it up in notepad there was no address after the local ip address, i read this can mean DNS is corrupt??

Ihave tried everything. I exported and deleted the winsock files through reg edit, unistalled aol, cleaned all temp internet files and deleted cookies, reinstalled hardware and upgraded Xp from boot disk, deleted connection and made new one. i have tried system restore, defragmenter, unistalled kazza, firewell is not active, and i haven't installed any new software lately. Ihave talked to tech support for about 20 hrs from 4 different companies and no one can help me. i have thought about reinstalling XP in a new directory, but I am unsure how to do it. If you need any more info please ask

Looking forward to hearing any suggestions you may have.

    Thanxs in advance,
    jsenkar

    Hi jsenkar and welcome.

I am assuming that you meant URL when you said IP address. Any www thing is a URL. If you really can't get to a page by putting in it's actual IP address (something like 123.44.55.66) then you may not get any benefit but if it is a URL issue (something like www.somewhere.com) I think you may have the same problem (and can use the same fix) as described Here.

If it doesn't work for you, post back.

    Newt,

Thanks for the suggestion, but it did not solve my problem. When I type in the url it says its detecting the proxy settings and is still looking for www.www.yahoo.com.net

I hadn't noticed the www.www.xxx at first. If you are really getting a double www, then there is no way you are gonna connect cause the address won't exist. Not sure what would be causing it though.

I can't give you specifics about the way AOHell will behave since (as you can maybe tell from the title I gave it) I am not a fan.

You mention you are getting a proxy error. Do you really connect thru a proxy server?

Also, try putting the IP address in the address block on your browser and see if you get there.

    Newt,
It still does not work when I put the IP address in. I do not have a proxy server setup, but everytime it searches for the page it says detecting proxy settings.??.

i tried to do an ipconfig/renew and it said it was trying to do an operation on something that isn't a socket? ( is that notmal) Also, when I typed in ipconfig/all there was no DNS suffix, should there be one?

    Thanks,
    jsenkar
