Double clicking on it, should be all that is required.(to run a program)

However, if you are trying to INSTALL an application that has a "bunch" of files in a zip folder, you will need to first UNzip it to a temporary folder and then run the install program.

The ZIP folder is called (for example), THISFILE.zip??

If you then doubleclick on it, it will open and show the contents.
    How many files are displayed?
If there is just one, (ie it's an install/setup exe), then just double click on it, and follow the install instructions.

But, if after opening it, there are a "bunch" of files, you need to do File > Extract All and follow the prompts to extract these files to a temp folder. Then, from that temp folder, double click on the install/setup exe to start the install.

Mark Hasenbein--What was the source of the .zip file? The reason I ask is that many programs that can be downloaded from the internet for installation are offered both as .zip files and as .exe files. The .exe file will be a little bigger (and therefore slower to download), but might offer you less problems, since to install, all you have to do is click on it and follow directions.
However, if you have to work with a .zip file, you need a program to unzip it. Do you have WinZip or something similar? Clicking on the .zip file should then automatically open it and you can see what is inside. As WhitPhil has said, you must then Extract the contained files. You do that by first creating a folder whereever is convenient (many people open Program Files, create a New Folder and name it whatever is an appropriate name for the program). (Or you can use a Temp folder as suggested by WhitPhil--just remember where that folder is.) Then click Extract on the unzip program and direct the Extract to the folder you just created.
Or in WinXP, you should have a built in unzip program. Right click on the .zip file, Open With, and one of your choices should be "Compressed Zip Folders ". Click on that and move the contained files into that New Folder you created earlier. If there is a readme.txt file, read it to see if it offers any help in installing. Or perhaps installation info was provided on the site from which you downloaded. Otherwise one of the files should be an .exe file, which is the Installation file. Click it and follow directions.
If, however, you do not find a .exe file, post back with more specifics such as what files you do find. .bat, .inf and some other files install differently. Or post back with more details if we are not answering your question. I really did not quite understand the part about
"I need to run this program to see if it will let me run another file ". Maybe this is a special situation.

Hi Jim & Phil, I have opened and run other zip folders but this one must be missing a file. I can open it by selecting all three folders then open and then i can run it. I have used both of your suggestions but I can't get it to work.
It's inconvenient but it will run, it doesn't have the info I need so i Will get rid of it.
    Thanks for the help
    Mark

I may be thinking wrong ( it won't be the 1st time ) And/or if I am wrong then I will get out of here and stay out.

But, unless I missed it somewhere, I have not seen any info as to what was done about the suggestion of a reinstall ( repair install ) of the OS made in
    This Post

If the problem(s) that the 400+ Viruses and Trojans created has not been cleared up then you may well be wasting time with other stuff. You may well have other files missing. I do not believe there is any one file in Windows that works alone. We may THINK it does because we click on it and it runs.

They may not be but, This Post AND the other may well be connected CLOSELY I believe.

As Welshjim has mentioned, many programs can be downloaded in 2 formats. The zip file often contains just the files with no installer so that it can be run as a "standalone" program or "installed" manually.

A handy utility for these files, should you decide to install one, is ZipInstaller. It will put the files in a folder in Program Files for you and create the needed shortcuts.

Mark Hasenbein--If nothing is working, please tell us the .zip file in question so we can see what needs to be done to install the executable.
