I cannot receive emails in NS7. Everthing else works just fine. When a message tries to download, I get and alert and this message "unable to write the email to the mailbox, make sure the file system allows you write privileges and you have the disk space to copy the mailbox "

I have followed the instruction from the help file on deleting and to no avail.

    thanks

    Welcome to the Forum, Whammy!

    Hi Whammy,

Try the workarounds on this page:
Cannot Open/Delete Mail - Mail Disappears

In addition to the above workarounds, check the File Attributes in the Mail file Properties. Ensure they are not set to "Read Only ".
(See File location in the above guideline.)
    Close Netscape
    Browse to the Mail folder
    Right click the files
    Select: Properties
Remove the tick beside "Read Only" (if necessary)

    Open Netscape
    Compact your Mail Folders
    Open the Mail Window
    Select: File | Compact Folders

    Clear your Cache and History
Cache: Edit | Preferences | Advanced Cache
History: Edit | Preferences | Navigator | History

Check the port setting for POP3 mail. It is normally 110.
    Edit | Mail & Newsgroup Accounts Settings | POP3 | Server Settings
    Disable: Use secure connection (SSL)

Do you by chance run Windows XP?

Post back with any questions you may have, or if you continue to have problems.

    Hi John

    Welcome to Windows BBS forums

With limited information to what occured prior to this event puts us into the guessing mode.........

Copied mail files from CD backup?
If you have done this, your mail files have been set to "read only ". Go to file properties and reset to write able.

    Have you recently upgraded versions?
Check your mail file path. Make sure it is pointing to your current profile.

    OS privilege settings.
Have you set up any new user accounts (which Netscape is currently running under) with NO write privileges?

    UPDATE............................
GGGGGG's, Ramona beat to to the first punch. When do you sleep girl? Are you multi-tasking again? One eye closed, the other hand on the keyboard. You just can't keep a good person down. :D

NS 7 want let me send or delete one message in the inbox.

First of all let me say thank you to the good folks who gave me some suggestions as to what to try.

This may help some. I had finised reading my mail in the inbox and was in the process of deleting what I no longer needed and fileing the ones I may need at a later time.

I had received and email form a trusted list (Underwater Explorers) and when I went to delete the 3k message it would not let me. I tried everthing that i knew to do and then went to the help section of NS7 and did as they asked (thanks Ramona) for the info in that area.

The single message is still in my inbox. I can not delete it or receive any messages there. I also have Communicator 4.79 installed and have been opening my emails from there.

Thanks again for the quick response and the help.
Oh yes windows XP is my OS.

    Hi Whammy,

Usually compacting your folders cures this type of problem. Have you emptied your Trash folder?

    With Netscape closed:
Open Internet Explorer and back up your Inbox file (without the MSF extension)

Open the Inbox file with Notepad, and delete the offending message
    Click on File | Save
    Close Notepad
If Netscape has rebuilt the Inbox.msf file, delete it

If this is the only message in your Inbox:
Delete the Inbox file and the Inbox.msf file
Netscape will rebuild it when restarted

Now open Netscape, and hopefully this has helped. Post back with results.

I am having the same trouble

    Hello, everyone!
Good to see a forum for this kind of help.

I have the same problem as Whammy - namely unable to write the email error message... (I did have trouble deleting an email last night but but I was finally able to somehow. Though I did have trouble deleting an Archive folder within Inbox that I created this morning in the hopes of copying inbox messages to a CD so I cna delete them from my hard drive - I was only able to delete this folder after deleting the msf files, then stopping and restarting Netscape).

I have taken the advice given in this thread but nothing has changed.

I'm using Windows XP. I have compacted my folders. Deleted the msf files. Checked the mail properties and Read Only box was not checked in any of the files. I have not copied mail from a CD backup nor upgraded netscape recently. I have cleared the cache and history. I have not added a new user account. The secure SSL is disabled. I even emptied the trash folder.

Other points of info: my inbox is about 220 megs large; trash is (was) 114 megs; sent is 700 megs; and I have an artist folder that is 800 megs large.

    What do I do now?

Thanks for your time and help.

    Welcome to the Forum, Z-Man!

    Hi Zev,

Since you have tried all the workarounds, and none have helped, then your alternative is to create a new Profile. I have a guideline set up HERE

Those Mail folders are really quite large, and, archiving to CD is a very good plan. Netscape did not intend the Inbox to be used for storage, and as the Inbox size grows, complications arise, as you are experiencing. See this page:
Archive & Access Netscape/Mozilla Mail on CD.

Thank you, Ramona for the help.

I spent most of last night creating a new profile and copying files to it. Heh. It turns out I was using an older profile (due to an earlier Netscape crash) when stating the sizes of my files (and I copied the wrong files into the new folder and thus had to do it all over again). My actual inbox was 2 gigs large!

Anyway it is now my OLDinbox and since it appears I just have to watch the size of the regular inbox, I'll have to create numerous folders and subfolders to move inbox mail I want to keep just to clear the inbox.

I can't wait to go through my OLDinbox and do that shuffling of files. But enough of that. Thank you again fo your help.

Thanks for getting back to us with your results, and I'm glad that you're getting your Mail folder back up to snuff!
