When you install Netscape, there will be a "Profile Manager" window. And it will show up the importing feature.

I give up, where is the "Profile Manager" window ?? When you say "when I install ", I have already installed and did not see such a window.

The only import feature I see is under Tools/Import in Mail. When I select this, and click on "mail/Comm 4.x ", it asks me to choose the profile that contains the mail I wish to import - I don't have a clue what is beiing asked for: what profile ?

Had you provided more information, I wouldn't have assumed you were trying to install Netscape 7.2

I would assume that you use only one profile, hence the Profile Manager window has never appeared to you (in both Communicator and Netscape 7.2)

If you want to import from your (entire) Communicator profile,
From Windows Start button | All Programs (*1) | Netscape 7 (*2) | Profile Manager. That's assume that you use Microsoft Windows 95 or later as the operating system.

    NOTE:
(*1) Might called something different under different version of Windows.
(*2) Default folder name during installation.

Otherwise, under Tools | Import ... as you mentioned. You will then need to locate your old Communicator profile if Netscape 7.x can't find the profile itself.

A profile is an overall library (containing preferences) that has your bookmarks, history, addressbook, emails and newsgroups etc that stored in your computer for the browser to use.

The default location profile location for Communicator is:
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\yourNSProfileName

When I click start/all programs/netscape/profile manager I get the netscape browser home page. And when I try the tools/import/mail/communicator 4.x an empty box comes up asking me to select the profile I want to use - like there should be one or more entries in the box (but I can't add anything to the box). Why am I getting the netscape browser home page from the click on profile manager and what is the box looking for (or where should I put the 4.x user I am trying to import so that it is regcognized) ??

You don't put the User anywhere. All you need to do is Copy the 4.7 Inbox, from the Users account folder, and Paste it into the account of your 7.2 account.
But, it does not seem to me that you are too familiar with the locations and make up of the Profile. Since I do not see any information about what operating system you have, please read this webpage
Make sure that Netscape is closed when you do all this.
Since, I assume that you have set up mail in 7.2, by now, you should do this, in the 4.7 Users account. Right click|Copy the Inbox, and right|Paste in an empty area of the same folder. You will get a Copy of Inbox, then right click|Rename on it. Get it a different name, like Oldinbox, Archive, whatever you wish..
By now, you will be familiar with the location of the 7.2 account. So, right click|Copy the renamed 4.7 file, and then right click|Paste into the 7.2 account folder. If you had not renamed, since the names are identical, the 4.7 Inbox would rewrite the the 7.2 Inbox.
You can repeat the process with the Sent file, and copy/paste any other folders.
When you open NS7.2 mail again, you should find the renamed folders corresponding to the file which you copied.
I tested what you could not do, and I was not asked about which profile to use, but it imported everything, and added as subfolders of the Local Folders.
I won't comment on your other questions.

Thanks. I think I have the problem in hand. I did not know where the mail folders were in 7.2 (XP), but when I found them in Mozilla, I moved the non-SNM files from 4.7 to the 7.2 folder and things seem to be OK. Thanks again to you and others who offered help.

The .snm files are the header files, and they would not do you any good for 7.2.
Also, keep in mind that Move or cut are dangerous. If you do not have the correct destination, you may have nothing left. Copy is best. You can always remove the old files, later.

Ditto the copy but, after doing so, rename the original folder, to confirm that the program isn't still looking at the original files. Only after you're satisfied that the program is finding the files in the new location is it safe to delete the originals.

They reside in different folders. The Firefox1.0 profile is in the same folder as 0.9x
