    Hello all,

I apologize if this has already been addressed in another thread, but I could find anything matching my situation.

I have recently had to format my hard drive on my XP Pro Box.

Before I did so, I saved all my wife's emails from Netscape Communicator onto another XP Pro Box by simply copying the email directories (C:\Documents and Settings\xxx\Application Data\Netscape\Users) on to the other box. (I could not figure a good way to export the email so that might be problem)

I have read that Netscape 7.2 isn't the best, so here are my questions:

1> My wife does NOT want to change from Netscape 7.2, what would be the way to import the mail folders back into the program. I have already tried just copying them back to the folder after reinstalling the program, but only the mail in the local default folders reappears (Inbox, Sent, Templates, Trash, Unsent) but all the other folders do not appear in the program (examples Pen Pals, Amy, etc) HOWEVER, when I to manually add the folders in the program, they say they already exist, and they will not let me add them even thought I can not see them. Or if I add the folder before I copy the folders over, the mail inside do not appear.)

2> If upgrading to a better program is what to do, how should I do it given my current situation.

    Thanks in advance!!!

Firstly, what do you mean by Netscape Communicator, a name given to NS4.8 and earlier version? The path indicates that you are talking about it. But you want to have your mail in NS7.2. The profiles for NS7.2 are in this path:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename or default\xxxxx.slt
So, if you did not save the correct folder, you are left only with old mail, unless your 4.8 (or lower) were active.
There is no way to "import" automatically the mail files, but it can be done manually .
If you have 4.8 mail you will see .snm file, which are ignored the same way as the NS7.x .msf files.
But, I see some serious problems.

On the other question, NS7.2 is a suite of Mail+Browser+more, and one could have the very similar, but updated Seamonkey, or Firefox (browser) and Thunderbird (Mail only). standalones.
One can import automatically the settings of NS7.2 to the standalones.

    Hi Donny,

I'll leave your mail problem for Westside and others to fix but, based on what you and Westside are saying, it does appear you may have backed up the wrong mail folder.

However, I thought I might give you my 2 cents regarding the browser and your wife's concern.

After being married to the same fat lady for 52 years, I do know something about making sure I don't get the wife ticked off.

AND I too was very reluctent to switch browsers because there is nothing like being comfortable in an old pair of shoes.

However, I would like to assure you that you will hardly notice the difference between Netscape and Seamonky because they both come from the same stable of horses.

I made the switch a long time ago and never regretted it.

Firefox and Thunderbird are probably the premier product today for browsers and email but, I prefer the suite and my comfort zone so I have chosen to use Seamonkey.

However, you can sort of have your cake and eat it too since you can install them all on your computer.

I have three versions, 3.04 & 4.76 & 7.02 of Netscape + IE + Firefox + Thunderbird and Seamonkey on my computer. I have this many because I do a lot of web pages and there is a some differences in how different browsers display the pages so I review the pages in each of the browsers.

To reduce your wife's concern and allow you both to see the difference in appearence without going through the download and install process I have posted images of the headers of both Netscape v7.02 and Seamonky v1.0.5 at:.. http://www.smyth1.net/donny

You will find images of both the Modern Theme and the Classic Theme for each.

The email sections of Netscape and Seamonkey are also practically identical.

I considered it time to move away from Netscape when AOL purchased it and I discovered Seamonkey.

By The Way, I have forgotten now just how I accomplished it or what the addition is called but, I sure liked being able to put a "HOME" Icon on the Navigation bar of Seamonkey which allowed me to hide the Personal Bar and have more screen space.

My 2 cents is done, Good Luck with whatever you choose
