Have done this hundred plus times but this time it comes up saying there are items to be imported.

Rebuilt machine from win98 to win982nd. Outlook Express 5. Upgraded i.e. to ver 6 as well as Express to 6. When I run the import messages function and point to where old messages are stored says nothing to convert.

What I noticed this time is that the mail from the old system had no identifies folder under application data just microsoft. Files are of valid size but wont convert over.

Anyway anyone can think of to bring mail over. Unable to go back to old system to export. Not an option.

Does this simply mean that you upgraded the OS?

No acutally I rebuilt from scratch with win98 2nd. Anway an answer as to why it wouldnt import would be nice to know. Have not experienced it before.

I was able to trick it by first importing to netscape messenger and then I did the import from within Outlook Express and everything came over just fine.

First used I.E. 5.5 sp2 with its outlook express then when that didnt work I upgraded to I.E. 6 with its outlook express.

Will from this point on look at the application data area and make sure it reflects identities correctly but if you have a work around or a reason why it would not import I would be interested.

Are you following the steps as described here? If so, then post back with more information as to what files you have backed up and the location to which you have backed them up.

On the orginal machine there is no variable identities. Everything is under application data/microsoft/outlook express/mail. The folders are correct with a folder.dbx and valid sized inbox, etc.

When I back up a machine I back everything up then when I copy it back to the newly reformatted hard drive I then pick and choose what I want back on new hd. ( favorites, bookmarks, cookies, etc. ) then I get rid of that old information except for putting certain items on a cd just in case I forgot to bring something over that user needs, ie a doc file that wasnt in the normal My Docs folder.

When I do the import I usually open express then point to the old hard drive where the mail folders are stored and it has always worked as well as for the address book. So yes I think I followed your link. There was in that link something I didnt know when having a problem so I thank you for that. Have created a shortcut link so I will have that available if needed.
