I have just installed Netscape Communicator 4.7, so I can use Linux. I have managed to transfer my Bookmarks from IE5, and my address book from OE5, but cannot transfer my existing email message files from OE5. When I try to "˜Export’ from OE5, I get an error message:

    Heading: Export Messages

The export could not be performed. An error occurred while initialising MAPI.

I have also tried to import from OE5 into Messenger, but also get error message.

    How can I do it?

For the record, my current O/S is Win 98SE

I'm sure there is a way to get your mail out of the vault known as OE... ;)

Have you considered downloading another windows mail client just for the sake of converting your mail to the standard mbox format which Netscape and Mozilla use? I am sure that Ramona and the others will have some better ideas, otherwise I will do some searching and post back later.

As an aside, I cannot understand why you would want to use Netscape 4.7x with Linux, when Mozilla is available, assuming you have a choice of browsers.

    Thanks, Tanquilo

Mozilla is not accepted by my two internet banks (and neither is Netscape version higher than 4.7).

Welcome to the Forum, Fred Brooks!

    Hi Fred,

Found this MSKB Article, which may help:

    Change your MAPI Settings
Configure Outlook Express to not be the default Simple MAPI client before you import the mail items. To do so, follow these steps:

    1. Restart your computer, and then start Outlook Express.
    2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
    3. On the General tab, click to clear the Make Outlook Express my default Simple MAPI client check box, and then click Apply.
    4. Click OK when you receive the prompt to restart your computer.
    5. Click OK, quit Outlook Express, and then restart your computer.

You can now import or export messages.
    ---

Also, open Netscape, and check your MAPI setting in:
    Edit|Preferences|Mail & Newsgroups

If MAPI is enabled, then disable the setting.

This NSKB Article may also be useful to you:
    http://help.netscape.com/kb/consumer/19990603-1.html

Also found this rather lengthy, but informative microsoft.public.ch.outlookexpress NG Article, with Google, which you might find interesting.

As a last resort, install IE 4 or Eudora, and you will be able to import Mail from those Versions using Communicator 4.7's Messenger.

    HTH,

    Ramona :D

Thanks v much, Ramona, for your v helpful reply.

Tried the MSKB article - Change Your MAPI Settings - Tools/Options/General:
Got: 'Default Messaging Programs: This application is NOT the Default mail handler'. (Which I assume is OK).

    Open Netscape: Edit/Preferences/Mail & Newsgroups:
Uncheck: 'Use Netscape from MAPI-based applications'
(assume that's what you meant, as couldn't see any other ref to MAPI).

Then followed NSKB article 19990603-1, exporting from OE5 to Outlook, then importing from Outlook to NS Messenger.
This gives me separate set of folders under heading ' Outlook Mail', with Inbox, Sent Items, etc, etc, all listed and accessible. Only trouble is that I have to click on these separately and wait for them to load. Is there a method of combining these folders with the Messenger 'Local Mail' folders, eg, Inbox, Sent Items, etc, so that I only have to deal with one set of folders?

Two further problems which I hope you can help me with: First, I find the 'Date' format used in Messenger very confusing as, in the 'Date' column, it gives the day and time, eg: 'Fri 1102', with no actual indication of the date. OE5 gives a full date and time as (in English notation): 14/02/03 1102. I'm sure there must be a way to configure Messenger to give a full date. Otherwise I find it very unsatisfactory.

Second, how do I insert a signature at the end of a message? I've tried the rather cumbersome procedure at Edit/Preferences, but it doesn't seem to work. In OE5 there is an easy way of inserting a signature - with a choice of different ones, as well.

I've looked everywhere for solutions to these two problems, including 'Help', with no success.

I should very much appreciate your help. Thanks in advance.

    Fred

Since writing my last message, I have managed to combine the two folders using Message/Move.

I should still very much appreciate your help on the other two items.

    Thanks

    Hi Fred,

This is how Messenger displays the date and time of messages, for the below time periods:

Week old Messages: 2/7/03 1:30 PM
24 Hr Old Messages: Fri 1:30 PM
    Current Messages: 1:45 PM

To insert a "Signature ". Open Notepad, create your "Signature" and save the file anywhere on your HD.

    Open Netscape
    Under Preferences|Mail & Newsgroups|Identity
Scroll down to "Signature File: "
Click on the "Choose" Tab and browse to, and select the file which you created.
Your signature file should then appear in all your outgoing email.

Let us know if you have more questions.

    Thanks again, Ramona.

OK, but I must say I find the signature facility cumbersome and limited.
