I am trying to help a friend get from Netscape Messenger 4.8 to Thunderbird. I downloaded Tbird, installed and told it to import and it pulled mail and settings in but not any addresses or lists (groups of addresses) I am right now trying to export from NM 4.8 but no luck, any ideas? I would have thought this of all migrations, Mozilla to Mozilla, would be easy.

OK,I can export a portion of this list, emails and lists, about 120 addreses and names from a total of 400 by exporting from NM saving as an LDIF file, If I try CSV, I cant get the data in the right fields and I loose the lists.

    more

Still nothing, does anyone have an export app I can buy, it keeps puking partway through the LDIF export, I guess I will go look at the record just after where it pukes.

It seems that you did the right things. I got this "recipe" from one website:
In the above case, it is Mozilla, but the same occurs with Thunderbird.
It is my understanding that everything is imported into Netscape7.x. So, that is worth a try. If it works, then you can go from NS7.x to Thunderbird. The file format is the same for NS7 and Thunderbird.

    Thanks Westside,
I finally got it to work. It was a corrupted record in the file being exported from Netscape Messenger I believe.

FYI it seems odd that there is no "native" import in Tbird for NM, just Eudora and Outlook. ie if you download Tbird, open and go to import I would expect to see all the Mozilla products.

In an attempt to figure out if it was a file size limit on either NM or Tbird side I dumped the whole file from NM into a csv file and opened in Excel. we printed it out and looked at it and I had her cross out any unneeded records, I went back to NM and killed them and tried an export as LIDF and it worked.

I do have one more question you may know the answer to. When you reply in Tbird it includes the header and starts the cursor at the bottom of the email. I have header set to normal. How do you not include and have the cursor at the top?

Same as NS, and other Mozilla products. Tools|Account settings|Composition
change from the dropdown to above.
As for the import, I am not sure what it does, as I have not had NM on my computer for years. I had imported my settings from NS7.x.
