HI group have a different one for you all this time. I have a Compaq Presario 5000 with 20 Gig Maxtor HD. While curing a klez-H virus the system on bring the restore back on line crashed scrambling the logical drive on the D drive( a dos extension. only one physical hard drive) From there the system just continued to degrade to nothing software wise. Eventually I desided to use the restore disk. During this period I had also got a 1720 imminent hard drive failure alarm generated in firmware on startup. (other discussion on here refers to the same problem), To my dismay the system restore disk is either bad or I got a bad disk with the initial package, it will not start up stand alone. Anyway to make a long story shorter I repartitioned using windows 2000. Then formatted using win 98 SE. and installed 98 SE everything seems to be fine but I still get the imminent failure alarm. (BY the way HP wants to sell me a new restore disk. LOL don't think I will take them up on that). Would like to get rid of the alarm though. Not sure how to get into BIOS to do that Is it possible? What is step by step to get into the bios on the COMPAQ Presario 5000? Thanks for listening and any help/advise you may have.

    Hi Rob!

I did a quick Google search and came across Compaq Hard Drive Firmware Upgrade . Have a look and see if it applies to Your problem, they say it´s false alarm.

I´m not sure but the only thing You can do in BIOS is to disable the S.M.A.R.T function that monitors the harddrive and I guess thats a bad idea.

    HTH,

    Christer,
Thanks for responding. That is exactly my problem. Unfortunatly the fix is only for laptops apparently. I feel quite confident that the hard drive is not bad and that it is an erronius error. I really don't want to waste a good drive. So I am willing to take the chance on turning off that smart feature in the bios. How do you do it on a Presario 5000? Can you give me a step by step to get into the bios.

    Rob,
    I don´t have a Compaq myself so, I really don´t know.

When starting the computer, watch the screen for a message like "to enter BIOS (or system setup) press <ESC> (or any other key).

Next, You have to look for S.M.A.R.T. in the BIOS. There are / should be hints on how to navigate with the arrow-keys.

Make sure to exit the BIOS without saving any changes until You´re sure that You´ve got it right and changed nothing else.

Caveat: It is not certain that it is possible to disable S.M.A.R.T. in the BIOS.

I wouldn´t give up on the harddrive just yet. Find the exact model number and go to Maxtor's Homepage and do a search to find any information first. If it can be fixed on a LapTop, I would believe that it can be fixed on a DeskTop.

Found that you can not turn off that test. Went to the maxtor site and got their utility to tyest the disk and it was in fact bad. Had to replace the disk. Thanks for the advice herein.
