Suddenly (like overnight) Outlook 2010 cannot connect to the imap server in gmail. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Are you seeing an error message? Have you googled the message?

I use Outlook 2010 too and IMAP works for me via Gmail.

Google changed the security at gmail on May 30th this year. "Unsecure" authentication is no longer supported, i.e. plain text passwords, etc. What you will need to do to make Outlook work again with gmail is:
    1. login to gmail using a web browser.
    2. access your account settings (click the user icon at top right.
    3. click on all settings
    4. on left pane click on Security
    5. Turn on 2 factor authentication
    6. create an App password
    7. use that App password in your Outlook gmail account.

Detailed instruction are in the link provided by Mr. Bill above.

    Replace 2 & 3 above with:

Click on the icon for YOUR user name / Google Account

Then you'll see the SECURITY tab option.
