For some reason, I am unable to create a restore point. When I open System Restore and select that I want to create a restore point and after naming the restore point and click create, I get the following message : "System Restore is not able to create a restore point. Please restart the computer, and run System Restore again." I have already done a search, looking for anyone else that had the same problem but all I can find are people having trouble with restoring their computer to an earlier time. Help:(

    Thanks,
    Matt

What is the amount set at? It is defaulted at 15% which is a lot if you have a large HD. I set all mine to 5% no matter the HD size.
How much free disc space do you have left? Try doing a Disc Cleanup with ALL the boxes checked, then do a Defrag. See if you can create one after that.

You might have some corrupt Windows files on your harddrive. Click Start< Run and type sfc /scannow and hit enter. Have your Windows XP CD handy in case SFC needs a file.

When that finishes click Start< Run and type cmd and hit enter. The command prompt window will open. Type chkdsk /r and hit enter. Check Disk will report that it can't run while Windows is running and will ask you if it can run on reboot. Type Y and hit enter. Reboot the pc for Check Disk to run.

If those 2 options don't get system restore working can you boot into Safe Mode and test to see if System Restore works there?

OK, I ran the chkdsk /r command and rebooted after performing the 1st step. When it rebooted and Autocheck began to scan it said that drive D is a RAW drive and that Autocheck is not available for RAW drives. I have my drive partitioned into two seperate drives. I have a screenshot of my drives from "Disk Management ". Unfortunatly I don't know how to post the screenshot. It shows that both drives are healthy. Under Disk 0 for drive C:, it states:

    DRV1_VOL1 C:
    112.71 GB NTFS
    Healthy (System)

and for drive D: which is the boot drive it states:

    D:
    353.04 GB NTFS
    Healthy (Boot).

When I boot the computer, I have a menu that asks me which drive to boot from with drive D listed first, which is WinXP Pro-sp3 and drive C listed second, which is WinXP Home edition sp3.

Is there any reason why you have 2 versions of Windows XP on your partitioned harddrive? Since you have your drive partitioned into 2 seperate drives try running check disk on each of the partitions. Click Start< My Computer< Right click on the harddrive< Properties< Tools Tab< Under Error Checking click Check Now< Make sure both checkboxes are checked and then click start. Did SFC report any errors and have you tried running System Restore in Safe Mode?

Which Firewall are you using ? I had a similar problem with System Restore and I had to close my Firewall before I could use System Restore. My Firewall is Online Armor

I had a similar problem and I found that my Firewall ( Online Armor ) was the culprit so I now close the fire wall to use system restore

Here are the following programs that I have running after boot. ATI Catalyst Control Center, Realtek HD audio manager, Linksys Wireless Network Monitor,
Spybot Search and Destroy, Spyware Terminator (currently disabled but still loads) and ZoneAlarm Security Suite (my Firewall)

At the time, I had wanted to tryout XP Pro and keep my previous OS just incase I had changed my mind. I haven't tried safe mode yet. I didn't think that I could create a restore point in safe mode. I thought that the only time you go into safe mode to restore to an earlier time is if you can't during a regular session.

I will try safe mode and see what happens.

OK, I tried checking both partitions as per your directions and after checking both boxes and clicking on "check now ", it says that "Windows was unable to complete the disk check ". It says this on both partitions.

I restarted the computer in safe mode and tried to create a restore point but the option wasn't there. I figured that was the case. That is why I didn't perform it to begin with. Anyways, still without Restore, even though it is enabled.

Hmmm, this is very puzzling. Try disabling your Zone Alarm firewall and shut down all background programs that are running in the system tray, then attempt to create a restore point. If that doesn't work try uninstalling Zone Alarm completely and see if system restore works.

Uninstalling ZoneAlarm isn't an option for me because I don't have any other comparable firewalls to use.

What do you mean? The Windows Firewall should keep the system secure until you reinstall Zone Alarm.

I didn't think that the Windows firewall could keep out as much as ZoneAlarm. Anyway, if I have to uninstall ZoneAlarm every time I want to create a restore point, it's going to be a pain in the azz.

I went ahead and shut down all programs running in the back ground, including my Zone Alarm firewall and also disconnected from my wireless router, reinstalled system restore again and preceeded to create a restore point only to get the same error message again. I decided earlier to boot into win xp home to see if I could create a restore point from there which I could. And I had everything running, except for Zone Alarm because it had expired. Instead I had Windows Firewall running in it's place. I have noticed that everytime I restart my computer, autochk runs and tries to scan the drive but it keeps saying that it is unable to scan a RAW drive.

I think your not able to create a restore point because you have 2 Windows XP installations and therefore system restore is conflicting with the other installation of Windows XP. At this point I don't know what else to tell you. If you have a genuine version of Windows XP Professional then I would back everything up on your Windows XP Home Edition partition and transfer it over to the Windows XP Professional partition and then remove the Windows XP Home Edition parition altogether. Its up to you if you wish to do this. I've honestly ran out of ideas.
