    Thank you Charles.

Now I have more resaon than ever to clamp down on the neighbor kid using IM on one of our machines.

The last time she was on it I caught her clicking on anything and everything and several people on a the same time. I happened to look as I went by and she was about to click on a file contained in a message. VERY LOUDLY I said NO !!!

Now I hear that both her and her family are ticked off at me. I just simply replied. "TOUGH !!. She is using one of my machines."

BTW. After one of her sessions AVG did pick up and clean up a possible virus.

    Hi BB,

Yeah, it always ticks me off when people have a lackadaisical attitude towards security, especially with other's systems

Does anyone know how/if file transfer could be disabled via firewalls / 3rd party tools ... my interest would be for MS Messenger ... and my 4 teenagers. I have my router "Blocking" their network address for the following file types, .bat, .exe, .msi, .pif, .scr, .vbs, .zip (allowing media files).

yes, p2p apps such as messenger use specific ports. Just setup the router port forwarding to forward all requests for the p2p ports to non-existant addresses, e.g. it is very unlikely that any comp on the network will be assigned an address of 192.168.1.250, so send all those requests to that ip.

    examples:

    Gnutella 6346 6347 (udp tcp)
    Kazaa 1214 (udp)
    IRC 6667
    Napster 8888
    MSN 11295, 14753 (utp) 15203, 7760 (tcp)

    Thanks TonyT

Just want to disable file transfer within MS Messenger. Would not "forwarding" MS Messenger to a black hole also take out "chat" features?
