Alrighty...let's try this from a different angle.
Do a fresh boot. Get online........ and then do a ctrl/alt/del and list for us what you have in the close programs dialogue box.

    Hi trying
Go to start...then run...then type in msconfig. Look under your start up tab to see what all you have checked. You'll be able to see what you can uncheck compared against this list

Daizy, I un checked a total of 9 items of the start up list, this improved my access to one of the forums (another one had started to not respond) however, the printer scanner forum still shows illegal operation. I wonder what?

    Hi again trying
You should have been prompted with a box after using msconfig, to tell you, you were using selective start up...not diagnostic?
What operating system are you using?
Did you ever answer if you have anything listed in your programs list under start up?

Daizy, I am back I lost the 256 color and could not get back to you. All of the programs do appear. I thought I would try the diagnostic start up. It cleared all the boxes in the startup, whichI did not expect, howerver, the illegal operation still appeared. I am
using windows 98 2ed. thank you fo staying thu this nightmare:eek:

Glad you made it back trying.
It seems we're having a bit of a communication problem. I'm not asking if you've got a list of programs. (I would most certainly hope that you do.)
I'm asking if in that programs list, you have an item called start up? (Click on the start button...........the go up to programs.........look in the list for "startup ") If you do........what is in that folder?

We're actually right back to the beginning. We need to determine what program is running that is giving you this error. Go back to msconfig's start up folder........and tell me once more...what you have a checkmark in.

Better yet..........compare it against this list that will tell you what's needed and what's not.

I've tried desperately to stay with you, until this got resolved..... but it looks like I'm going to be unable to follow through, as I'll be away for the next while. If no one picks up this post...please do post your question anew.

Daizy, You are truly great sport to stay with me,I do appreciate
your efforts. After all day I am a frizzle , I had to replace the drivers for scanner, printer, and another that I can't recall.
so the PC is up and running and I can get along with that.

Good nite and good luck Wes

No need to look into what programs are running etc etc just yet. The program that IS running when the error message appears is Internet Explorer. Therefore, something has corrupted or corrupts the IE program files (exe's and dll's). There are many many known 3rd party programs that can corrupt IE installations.

Most common are 'spyware' typ programs. I suggest downloading and running Adaware to detect and clean the system of spyware applications. These spyware apps sometiomes overwrite key dll's that internet explorer depends on to run smoothly and bug free.

Secondly, never just use MSCONFIG to disable startup programs. Alway first try to stop the app from loading at boot within the program itself. Many programs have an option to do so. If no option within the program, then use MSCONFIG.
