Maybe I`m in the wrong forum?
Running Windows 98, Roxio CD Creator Platinum 5, and everything seems to work fine until I attempt to open Soundstream, I get SNDSTRM Error, ignore or close, on close I get the Windows Illegal operation error. Details of that are as following.

SNDSTRM caused a general protection fault
    in module AVSNDSYS.DRV at 0006:00000ee3.

I ran a search on Google on the Sndstrm error and got advice to the effect to search out MFC42.Dll and name all "old except" one. which I did, to no avail.
    Where to now?

Perhaps something I saw mentioned once:

If there is an mfc42.dll in the SoundStream folder, rename it to mfc42.old, and copy the one in the Windows\System folder to the SoundStream folder.

If that doesn't work, compare the versions and place the latest one in both Windows\System folder and the SoundStream folder.

Some applications need particular versions of that file to run. I remember the old McAfee First Aid 2000 needed its own version, which could be recopied by searching the First Aid installation cd for it.

I'd be wary of putting an older one in the Windows\System folder though.

That message tells me that SoundStream is having problems with your sound card drivers. Perhaps updating them?
The Mfc42.Dll you left alone, is it in the C:\Windows\System folder? It should be. BTW, do not delete the other ones, epecially if located in a programs folder, as the program may need that version to run.

Thanks for the replies. I`ll see about drivers for that sound card and post back.
As to the MFC42 .dll here`s the advice I got, and followed.

Try uninstalling Easy CD Creator through Add/Remove programs. After uninstalling do a search for MFC42.dll. You should find multiple instances of this file. From here just rename all of them to MFC42.OLD EXCEPT for the one found in C:\Windows\System.

    Reboot then reinstall ECDC.

Note it says rename, not delete. Thanks

As far as using the file goes renaming is the same as deleting. There is no program that I know of that will use a file with the extention .OLD.

And I have found with some files that once they have been renamed with .OLD you might just as well delete it any way. In the past I have tried renaming some back to the original and they would not work any way.

I have found that MOVING the file intact to a partition that is not searched by Windows or the program works just as well.

That, amongst a whole bunch of other stuff, I didn`t know. Any way, I didn`t harm anything but neither did it help.I did it as told, I see now there`s MFC.dll in Windows, programs, and Grisoft AVG,and Adaptec Easy CD.
I can do all the other operations on the CD writer except the soundstream thing. Thanks to all!
Billy Bob, I`m still using my External modem, one of your better pieces of advice.
I guess I didn`t want all my old Cassettes anyway. :(

I always found Roxio 5 to be a hit or miss proposition with Windows 98. I used to just stick to Easy 4 with 98.

But if what you want to do is to create CDs from your old cassette tapes, get the freeware Audio Grabber. It'll convert them to mp3s. Then you can burn CDs.
