A class member bought a new laptop with Windows 8 installed, for some reason he asked for the Ikons on the screen to be removed, ( he did not like the screen 'cluttered up' ?)I believe they are the OS Ikons, we have to shut down by going to ctrl alt del 'task manager' and shut down from there,he leaves the Laptop to shut down itself.
We need to re-establish the Ikons and have the tool bar back.
I have not used Windows 8 yet, so am a bit lost as to what should appear at start up.

I'm not familiar with W8, but did he have a "Restore Point" established? Neil.

Thanks for your responses, class member has taken laptop back to shop (not a known computer shop) and asked for it to be set up to his requirements or change the OS.
This poses the same old problem of suppliers installing Operating Systems without reasonable consultation with customer.
    Will mark this Resolved
    Thanks again

For future reference, -easiest way to "remove" icons is to right-click desktop & select "View "> "Show desktop icons" (untick it)

The icons are still there, just no longer visible on screen - to get them back reverse the process.

Thanks Nick, just found that out when getting answers for 'Run' not being on Vista.
good bit of info to have.
Hope you are not in the flooded areas in Britain, we are in the Southend (Essex) area, OK so far, but keeping a watch out because they opened the Thames Barrier recently.
    Thanks again,
    Spanner

Thanks Nick for the 'stay safe', I know Chester, I stayed in the Plantation Inn some time back.

Water has receded in drive and road, it was not a problem, hope it stays that way.
Had a look at your System. you could launch a space craft with all that.
I must get around to putting my systems on my profile, they are nothing like yours.
I prefer towers (Under the Desk) with On buttons and Driver working light on top of case. trying to find some cases with that config, one of mine is a converted 'Tiny' any ideas?

After you hide your ICON's on the desktop, right click on a blank spot next to your task bar and then choose Toolbars/Desktop and then when you want to see something, click on the 2 little carats (>>). Been doing this for years.
