Windows 2000 advanced server with IIS smtp install with remote pointing to the ip address of the Exchange server (windows 2000 advanced server, Exchange 2000)

If I drop a test message into the drop folder, it moves to the queue folder, but never changes to a *.rtr file. The message stays in the queue folder.

    Any ideas?

Drop it into the pickup folder (user needs modify rights).

Can you telnet into the SMTP port (25) of the Exchange Server from the web server and send mail? Exchange needs to accept connections from your IP address (relay).

If you have working DNS resolution on the web server, try sending the mail directly instead of using a smart host.

I can telnet and send email to the mail server, internally.

When I telnet and send email to an external rcpt. I get "unable to relay.

I have smtp relay set up with the mail server IP in the [].

    Any ideas?

You need to configure relay restrictions in Exchange. See TechNet
