I am having an issue with some websites opening in a reasonable to quick amount of time and then other sites (like my bank's site) take forever to open and sometimes don't at all.

I'm running Vista Home Premium with 2 gig of RAM and have run all programs such as malware bytes, ccleaner, defrag, my AV software and disk cleanup and nothing is out of place.

Why do some sites work and others don't

    Any thoughts would be appreciated
    Thanks

Have you tried opening the sites in Compatability mod?

    1) Not all sites are created equal. The amount of ads/annimation/flash/etc can affect the site.
    2) The number of people connected to the site can affect performance etc....

The list can go on....Do you have more then one pc and or can check the sites from different locations?

    Welcome to the WWW.

As Steve said, its just a fact of life. Also, your bank uses https (secure connection) which has a high CPU overhead (on their server), it looks like they don't have enough capability to serve their current client load.

On those sites that take a long time to load, do they completely load or is there some things that didn't load & only a small square is there in place of the object or there are horizontal lines through some of the menu items; ex: Yahoo Mail website will load slow & when it is complete, there are lines through items like: delete, forward, send & etc.

I suggest you try a Reset of IE8 - Tools > Internet Options > Advanced - Reset, although I would not be confident that that would resolve your problem.

Update - the user tells me this morning that on start up there was a window with the message "the system fan has failed and please service computer ".

She took it off to the repair shop before talking to me so we shall see what happens.

The other computer in the house load pages normally so it must be the machine itself.

I shall see what she comes back with
    Thanks in the interim

    Update
The "computer store guy" said he scanned the computer for malware, charged her for 2 hours of work and when she set it up at home again there was no change. This after me having run through everything for her the night before and not finding anything untoward.

I asked what he had to say about the fan issue and he sloughed it off as "no big deal... don't worry about it"

To make matters worse she called her ISP who told her that Incredimail was the cause for her websites not loading.

Miraculously she was able to load web pages this morning without trouble so she is happy for the moment... we will see what this afternoon brings.

I think I am better of staying out of this one because she is like a rabbit - when an notion she hears, up pops her ears...

    Thanks all
