I have an XP Pro PC which refuses to play Flash - even though I know that the latest version of Flash is installed. I run several other XP Pro PC's and they run Flash fine, where do I look to see the difference in setup?

Hi muddyfox. After running the flash uninstaller download and install the latest version from here. Make sure you close IE8 during the flash player installation.

If flash player still doesn't work determine if the add-on for flash is enabled. Open IE8 and click Tools< Manage Add-ons. Under Toolbars and Extensions look for the Shockwave Flash Object. Make sure it is enabled. If it isn't then enable it.

    Heads up:
IE8 32bit mode or 64? Flash is not supported by 64bit must be using ie in 32bit mode.

if this is the case see archives for our board on topic:
flash and ie 32bit not 64 bit

Thanks folks - tried all your suggestions. Flash still not playing nor incidentally can I get Google Chrome to run as anything other than my Admin account logon. Leads me to think that despite having the same profile as my others this PC has somehow picked up different settings somewhere. If I'm right any suggestions please as to where I need to look?

Try creating a new profile - possible the current one is corrupt.

    Thanks Pete C.

Nope - tried that, still doesn't work. Flash works fine with me logged on as an Admin but with a restricted user it just fails to run on one particular site http://friv4school.com/ yet it works fine in the Opera browser. I have hunted high and low to try and spot any difference with settings on the next same make same build PC all running XP Pro. Nothing apparent. Tried registry searches - nothing relevant. Even did a complete un-install of IE8, rebooted, cleaned registry, rebooted reinstalled IE8. Still no joy. Obviously it's not earth stoppingly important just an annoyance that I'd love to get sorted.

Still no joy with this PC. My gut tells me it must be something lurking in the registry settings but for the life of me I can't see and difference comparing with neighbouring computers.

Everything was fine on it until I installed The CEOP IE8 Browser. Straight away the CEOP settings took over removing the default homepage (set by Server 2003 Group Policy) and on this particular machine loosing the ability to run some Flash items on IE8. Interestingly though Opera and Google Chrome don't seem to be effected.

Grandkids play on the site you have in post # 7 on 4 of my XP machines and also on 3 that they have.

Have you tried uninstalling Flash, use CrapCleaner and do a disc cleanup and a Registry cleanup and then download it again?
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner I have used the registyr cleaner with it probably a couple of hundred times with no ill effects. It will ask you if you want to make a backup. Say yes and it will make one and put it in My Documents.

Thanks Mr Bill a very useful answer and explaination of what CCleaner is actually called :D

I too find CCCleaner a very valuable tool but haven't tried the uninstall of Flash then running it on the offending machine.

hopefully it will work and allow me to mark this thread as solved.

Tried Mr Bill's suggestion and unfortunately it didn't solve the problem. My gut feeling tells me this is a problem in a local policy but for the life of me I can't find where it is?
