Hi. I need help. I am running Vista and IE8. Today (I think its after updating my Yahoo Msgr) all of a sudden my IE8 stops saving cookies, recently visited sites history and all other cookies which i had before. Everytime I close IE and re-open it, nothing is saved.
I DO NOT have "delete history upon exit" checked. I have everything right in the AutoComplete section. It didnt happen after Windows update or anything alike.
    Can someone please help?
    Thanks!

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

    Try a Reset of IE8 .....

Tools > Internet Options > Advanced - Reset.

    Start IE without add-ons .....

Never used Vista, but in 7 .....

Orb > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools - Internet Explorer - no add-ons

In XP you could right click on the IE desktop icon and select no add-ons.

Test IE to see if cookies, etc are being saved. If they are it is a recent add-on which is causing the problem - maybe the Yahoo Messenger update you mentioned.

If IE runs correctly in no add-ons mode restart it in normal mode and go Tools > Manage add-ons and disable any Yahoo add-ons for a start. If this resolves the problem re-enable one by one until the problem returns. The last add-on enabled is the one causing the trouble.

If the problem remains disable all add-ons and re-enable one at a time until the problem returns. The last add-on enabled is the one causing the trouble.
Post the settings for a crosscheck.

    Hi Pete
Thanks for the help. But I tried to run IE in the add-on disabled mode like you suggested and yet the cookies werent saved. (What I did was I ran IE in disabled mode, then type in a few urls, closed IE, reopened in add-on disabled mode).
What settings would you want me to post for you to crosscheck? And how do I post them? Thanks again.

Your Autocomplete settings which you say are right ....
For simplicity check them against mine - screenshot.

Is your Browsing History being saved while IE is open and you surf around a few sites?

    Hi Pete
My setting is pretty much the same as yours, except Ask Me Before Saving Passwords box is also checked on mine.
The Browsing history is saved while i have the IE open. Its just that when I close IE and reopen it, everything will be gone.

    I don't have a quick answer - if only :) and I'm out today .....

Do you have any third party tool bars installed?

Have you cleared out all your temporary Internet files - Tools > Internet Options - General tab - Browsing history - Delete. It may kick start IE into behaving although I rather doubt it as you have already done a reset.

Check 'Delete browsing history on exit' - surf a while and exit IE. Re-open IE and uncheck that option and test.

On the off chance that malware is involved download, update and run Malwarebytes and see if it throws anything up.

Consider the possibility of a System Restore to a date prior to the issue.

Hi. I tired everything u mentioned. Although i found a few malware and have them removed, the problem persists. I tried System Restore as well but everytime i tried it (since i have had this computer) it just tells me Restore cannot be completed; So i am always back to square one. I remember when i isntalled Yahoo Msgr, i forgot to choose Custom Install and while it was trying to install Yahoo Toolbar, my Google toolbar window kept popping up and asked me if i wanted to keep Google, and I clicked Yes. I think it was the root of the problem (I suspect). Because ever since the installation, my IE8 just effed up. I have unistalled Google Toolbar, it didnt help. Any other solutions?

Grasping at straws now - the symptoms you experience are what would be expected if you were using InPrivate browsing, but as that is a per session setting initiated by the user this is unlikely to be the source of the problem.

I really have only 2 other suggestions ....

Uninstall Yahoo Messenger and Yahoo toolbar and test.

Remove IE 8 as detailed in this KB article .....

How do I uninstall or remove Internet Explorer 8?

This should take you back to IE7 - would be interesting to see if IE 7 behaves as expected. If it does then a reinstall of IE8 may fix the issue.

    Hi Willtor,

It sounds like you have taken a lot of great steps...resetting IE8 settings, running in no add-on mode, etc.

At this point I think a reinstallation of IE8 is the way to go. This support article will tell you how to reinstall while using IE8 on a Vista computer - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378

    Hope this helps!

    SOLVED!!!
It wasnt IE or any malware. It was my anti-virus program! Phew.
The program has a default setting of clearing everything when IE closes and every 60 mins.
    Thanks for all ur help.
    Cheers.

Well found - would not have thought of that :)

For our future reference please post the name of your antivirus software - I have not heard of one that empties IE's temp files, etc. Sneaky default setting :)

I am from Toronto, Canada and my ISP, ROGERS, has its own anti virus software. For those who uses Rogers Online Protection and wishes to keep all ur cookies. Do the following:
    1. Open your Rogers Online Protection program
    2. Choose Privacy Control
    3. Choose Preferences
    4. UNCHECK "Clean up after 60 minutes" AND "Delete Files when Internet Explorer exits "
    5. Click OK
    DONE!
