    Hi,

I just realised I have this problem so I don't know for how long.

For a while now when IE opens it is opening 2 windows and immediately freezing, so today I decide to try and repair it and reinstall. After downloading IE8 during installation the dreaded BSOD!

After restarting I thought I'd check out Internet Options in the CP and that just flashed a small window but wouldn't open.

I downloaded Avant so I could run a Windows Update, but there were none.

    Stumped!!

    Any ideas please?

Please go to User CP near the top left of this screen and fill out your system specs and be sure to SAVE them.

Don't know what version of Windows you are running. Go to Control Panel/Programs and remove IE. It will revert back to the last one. See if that fixes the problem. Then you can try updating it back to the the next version.

I filled in all the necessary stuff some time ago and neglected the motherboard and soundcard stuff but I'll sort it out soon.

I'm sorry MrBill, but why are you asking me what version of windows I'm running when I've posted my question in the XP forum?

Anyway, after attempting the uninstall, BSOD, again (sigh!).

You did not post in the XP forum. You posted in the Internet Explorer forum.

It could be helpful if you posted details of the BSOD - the error code and any file noted.

NB - your thread was moved to the Internet Explorer forum by Admin.

    So I did! Apologies MrBill.

I thought I put it in the XP forum because I don't believe my problem is purely IE in light of the fact I can't open Internet Options in the Control Panel. Having said that, it seems anything I do to IE causes the old BSOD - repair, uninstall, install.

In the meantime, for things like Windows Updates (due this week) I installed Avast and whilst on the whole it works fine, it too can't open Internet Options via the Tools menu.

I did a system restore to a safe date (didn't fix anything) but the problem is, I don't know how long I've had this problem!

I didn't see the previous post from PeteC because I followed the link from my email, so it appears we're both right MrBill.

As for the BSOD, it happened so quickly and I was a bit surprised (having not had one for yeears) and didn't notice any error codes. Should I now deliberately cause a BSOD?

When a BSOD occurs you see a blue screen with the error message and stop code and the computer requires a reboot. Are you seeing this?

Yes Pete, twice. But as I said, I didn't react quick enough to log the details so as I said previously, do you want me to do it again?

I haven't used XP since the beta of Win 7 came out so my recollection of the OS is a little hazy, but thinking about it I now know the reason that you do not see the blue screen for more than a brief second.

Your computer has the default setting of Restart on System Failure - hence you do not see the blue screen for more than a second or so.

As you can't get into Control Panel to change the setting I will have to fire up my old XP box and see if there is another way of getting to the appropriate dialogue. This is the usual route ....
You will have to bear with me as I am otherwise engaged at the moment, but I'll be back shortly.

BTW - your System Details are not showing because you did not complete the process ....

Start > Run > type in control sysdm.cpl > Enter.

Does System Properties open? If so follow the instructions in my last post.

Ok, firstly the System Options is accessible, no problem's there, it's the Internet Options that won't open for whatever reason.

I did indeed forget to select Sys Specs - rectified.

I've changed the auto restart settings.

All's that remains then is to complete the rest after the next BSOD.

Sorry about that, been away for a while.

Since my last post, the problem has gone away cos I got my son's hand-me-down PC. I suppose I was hoping for too much with the old PC, it was a bit on the old side and the problems were mounting up but thanks for your help though guys.
