Are you getting a Download Comlete message?
Can you find the file after download?

What happens when you right click your download and then select Save As? Are you given an opportunity to save it and a Radio Bar with the location it is being saved to (which can be changed by expanding the right down arrowhead ▼)?

    ;)

What is the target? And, what is the name of the file you are trying to save?

Lets also try this excercise. Create a document and name it jeepstersfile. Send your self an email with that attached. When you open the email, save the attachment wherever you are trying to save things. Then close things up, get back to your desktop and do a search for jeepstersfile. You should find two of these. One will be in your documents folder and the other should be wherever it was saved.

The target is the desktop, any file type is not saved using internet explorer 8 beta. I am able to save attachments from emails, so what's the point? It's IE that will not save. Firefox has no problems.

I read your first post as meaning you could not save any downloads after installing IE8 beta, not as you could not save any downloads while using IE8 beta only. Not having any clue as to your level of proficiency, my first take was that you probably just didn't know where these were being saved. My apologies. Now that you've cleared the air - go to the advanced settings tab and reset your browser. This should clear any add-ons and reset you to default security. Does this make any difference?

Next question is third party apps re: Malware, AV and firewall -> What are you running in this regard? What real time scanners are active?

I reset IE as suggested but same happens. I get download dialogue box and download commences but when finished disappears. No run box, file is not saved to desktop. Should I go back to IE7? I am running Vipre anti virus/spam software. Zonealarm firewall.

Have you tried taking the checkmark out of the "close box when download complete" and then trying to "follow" the file by selecting open folder? I would anticipate this may also be a dead end but its worth a try.

I wish I knew the best answer to give you but it certainly isn't going to hurt to go back to IE7 and wait until IE8 moves out of beta. I can't help but wondering if this may be a zone alarm issue but if it were my box, I'd move back to IE7 and be done with the problem. Obviously there is something at play here that's not kosher.

I always have the checkmark out, so can't think what else to try. Will go back to IE7.
Thanks so much for your help.

    jeepster,

Thanks for your kind comments but unfortunately, no worthwhile help has really been provided. Please let us know if the return to IE7 restores your ability to download files again.

I moved to IE8beta on a new Vista setup because I lost everything on my "Links" button after copying over a bunch of stuff from one of my XP Pro boxes. Could still run Links by accessing from Favorites but drew a complete blank using the Links button in my Browser. After the upgrade I discovered that IE8 had done away with the Links button so it was no fix at all. I too may soon return to IE7 to see if the problem goes away or let's say was corrected by the IE8 install and uninstall.

    Regards,
    ;)

    Same issue

I'm experiencing the same issue... the only difference is that it worked one day and stopped working the next. I called microsoft's free ie8 tech line and they tried everything but couldn't help me. In addition to not being able to save files, ie8 cannot "run" files from their locations either. We found this problem when the tech tried to connect remotely to my pc. I reverted to ie7 and everything is was working fine. :(
