I recently got about 200 updates for a laptop running XP Pro. IE7 was one of them, and after an incredibly long restart, I have no internet browsing capability on the computer.

IE7 tried to load that first time guide, but the images weren't loaded and then I got a "Internet Explorer has experienced a problem and needs to close" error. Then it gave me 404s for any website, and then crashed the same way as the first session. I loaded it up a 3rd time, and now I don't even get 404s, no loading seems to occur.

NOD32 Anti-Virus, Sygate Firewall, and Spybot S&D anti-spyware are all installed and updated to the latest versions.

Hmm, i'm sure the network connection works, and i've run both the connection diagnostic wizard and cleared the cache. No dice.

I'll download portable Firefox off another computer to see if it's just IE7 or if the network stack of Windows got messed up.

EDIT: Neither portable Opera or Firefox can load a page. But when I uninstall IE7, restoring IE6, everything works again.

How about checking Event Viewer for details about the IE 7 crashes? Should be no need to reinstall IE 7 first. I expect the error events are still recorded in the Event Viewer Application log.

Instructions About How to Access and Use "Event Viewer ":

• Click Start.
• Right-click My Computer.
• Select "Manage" to open the "Computer Management" window.
(Event Viewer will be displayed under the "System Tools" directory item.)
• Expand "Event Viewer" and then select "Application ", "Security ", and "System" to view the logs.
• Look for "error" events that occurred around the time your problem occurred. These events will be displayed as icons with either a white X on red background or a black exclamation point on yellow background. In the security section of Event Viewer, events of possible concern are ones that display a padlock icon instead of a key icon.
• Double-click on an individual event to open the "Event Properties" window which shows details about the event.
• You can use the up/down arrow buttons in the "Event Properties" window to move your focus to other events in the list.
• Use the button below the up/down arrows to copy the details for an event to your clipboard for pasting elsewhere.
• Click on the "http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp" link in the "Event Properties" window to view more information from Microsoft about the event.

Alternatively, Event Viewer may be accessed as follows.
• Click Start > Run...
• Type eventvwr.msc in the "Open:" field.
• Click the OK button.

I've got a bunch of "General Application Failure" events.

Do those "General Application Failure" events in Event Viewer provide any details such as Event Source, Event ID, and Description details you can copy/paste into a forum message from your clipboard (as instructed in my other post above)?

Sometimes the event Description identifies a "faulting application" and/or "faulting module" that might help us Google around and/or search the MS Knowledge Base for possible solutions.

Event ID.Net is also sometimes helpful for finding information about specific Event IDs.

NOTE: If you read any EventID.Net pages, you will probably see "Mxxxxxx" links (where the xxxxxx are 6 numerical digits). If you click on those links, you will be told the information "is only available to EventID.Net subscribers ". When I had a subscription to EvenetID.Net, I found those "Mxxxxxx" links often had the same or similar information found in Microsoft "KBxxxxxx" Knowledge Base (KB) articles for FREE (with the same xxxxxx digits as the Mxxxxxx links). :)

In such situations, search the Microsoft Knowledge Base for KBxxxxxx (with the appropriate numerical digits displayed for the "Mxxxxxx" links on EventID.Net).

It's probably best to access Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) articles with Internet Explorer. I have found other web browsers (such as Firefox) sometimes have trouble rendering Microsoft KB web pages properly.
