    WIN98SE, no-name 2.6GHZ w/ 512mb RAM on DSL with ZoneAlarm:

I just got a message that my "C" drive (8gb) was full and I should delete...etc, etc.

Went looking on the drive to see if something had snuck under the firewall and found that the Internet Explorer's TempInternet Files were almost 4.6GB!

Went to the IE tools and clicked delete all temp files, waited, then when it was done, went and checked again... no joy, recovered only 90-odd MB of space.

Went into File Manager and checked out the folder... sure enuf, 4.6 GB of stuff.

My question: If I click all those subfolders under Temp I get a "xxxxx is a System Folder" warning.... Just what do I need to leave in there othere than any .ini files for desktop or systray?

pippopottomus--Have you tried the IE Tools|Internet Options|General tab|Delete Files again (and again if needed)?
If you are talking about alphanumeric-named folders under TIF/ Content IE5 files, you can just (try to) delete the folders themselves, spite of any warning. There is nothing in there that you need. The folders, themselves will be recreated the next time you boot (with different names).
I use a program called DelTemp
    http://home.ptd.net/~don5408/apps/deltemp/deltemp.exe
I think you will get a Help file with the download. And you need to have Windows Scripting Host enabled.

Alternatively try EasyClean 2.0 > Unnecessary Files - check Temp Internet Files

    Update

    thanks, folks!

No, I only tried it once and then hollered for help. (Cowardly, but probably smarter in the long run!) I'll try it several times and let you know what happens.

D/l both programs and will give 'em a try too.

As Ahnuld says, "Oll Be Bach! "

    Resolution

Don't I feel the right berk, then!

Turns out that the jam-up of stuff was NOT coming from outside, but had been generated by my looking at a partially downloaded movie from KazaaLite. Everytime I'd click on it to run the partial, it would save it to the harddrive in the Internet Temp file... there were twelve instances of the **** thing ranging from 358MB to 485MB... more than enuf to choke my 8GB partition when assembled with the stuff that should have been there.

Took your advice, Welshjim and just bombed the folder totally and we're back in commission and down to 2.3GB usage. Dunno what it is about IE6, but it sure doesn't like letting go of things!

I think it's probably about time to bite the proverbial bullet and upgrade from WIN98SE, though. A shame, as I'm fairly confident about kicking it about the place with some expectation of recovering from whatever silliness I may engender, but everything I've heard about XP-Pro seems to be good, especially about memory usage and stability.

I'm just an old stick-in-the-mud about changes, I guess.

Thanks for the advice...worked just fine.
