For about a month, I've had problems with IE6 closing (completely) when I go to certain URLs. About 10% of the URLs I hit are shutting down IE6. The behavior is that the web site is shown momentarily (fraction of a second), and then IE6 is gone . . . poof! It is repeatable and consistent. If a link causes a problem, it will always kill IE.

I've run spybot and ad-aware, and cleared the files cache and deleted the cookies, and nothing has changed. There is no warning messages, so it doesn't seem to be aligned to the problems discussed on the Microsoft Knowledge base.

Here is an example link that shuts down my IE:

    http://www.etronics.com/product.asp?icatid=4197&stk_code=sonsawm500&svbname=31

Anyone have any suggestions on how I can fix this?

That link worked fine on my computer but it requested Java. Not all web pages need Java and when it is requested, a cup of "java" appears in the notification area (if Sun Java is installed as on my computer).

I'm not sure if this is the problem but check if any flavor of Java is installed, go to Tools > Internet options > Advanced.

If You haven't got it, get it here , either automated install or download and subsequent install.

(Strange that it goes poof, though ...... ......)

tquinn--You can test whether you have Sun Java installed here
    http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.jsp
I think this site will tell you if you have either Sun Java or Windows Virtual Machine already installed
    http://www.albany.net/~rubergd/example1.html
P.S. Maybe I am showing my ignorance, but I think Sun rates close to the top in confusing information about what is the latest version of Sun's Java.
    I believe it is here
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp
    (rather than version 1.4.2.06)
But you would have look pretty hard to find it.

    Java probably it

Okay, I tried the three links that Welshjim suggested. The first two "poofed" my browser dead. So it sounds like your Java idea may be right.

I attached a Microsoft Word file with the settings of IE attached. It looks like there is reference to Java interpreters, but I don't know enough about what the settings should look like as to whether they are operable or not.

Thanks if any of you can make something of it.

    tq

Jim - I agree they are really confusing if you only want to install the stuff to allow viewing of web pages.

http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp and the button for the OS you are running is about the easiest way to get the latest version of the 'I don't wanna program with the stuff' version. j2re1.4.2_06 is it today.

On page 3 it is revealed that You have both Sun Java and Microsoft VM (Virtual Machine which is their version). Try unchecking JIT.

If that doesn't work, try unchecking Sun Java and checking Microsoft VM Java console.

Having both running is probably not a good idea. You don't have to uninstall either but use one or the other.

    Java was it

    Christer,

Thank you. That fixed it. I uninstalled the JIT first, and when it went to the test site, it stayed up for a few seconds before it went "poof." An improvement.

So then at your suggestion, I tried it the other way, uninstalling Java, and enabling both the Microsoft Java console and compiler. The problem site stayed up and didn't disappear.

So thanks again very much for taking the time to offer a suggestion to repair my system.

    Terry

p.s. This is just another data point in a long list that demonstrates to me that the reliability state of personal computing operating systems is comparable to that of the state of automobiles in the early 1900s. If you owned one then, you had to be a mechanic, or at least have access to a good one. Same applies with PCs today. I often wonder how people without that knowledge (the proverbial little old lady) can keep their computers running.

    Terry,
glad to hear the good news ...... :) ...... !

I'm a bit surprized, though, that the Sun Java didn't work properly ...... ...... but that doesn't matter.

To clear (?) any confusion, they don't get uninstalled by unchecking in Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet options > Advanced, they just get disabled.

To uninstall, go to Control panel > Add/Remove.

Newt and Christer--Thanks. Learned something here.
Now tell me how to open tquinn's .php file. I tried clicking on it. Then I tried IE, Notepad and WordPad. Got nothing with just clicking or IE and a bunch of code with Notepad and Wordpad.

    Jim,
when I click the "explorer settings.zip" and choose open, I get a corrupted file message. When I download to local HDD and double-click, the zip-file opens and there is "Explorer Advanced.doc" which opens nicely in Word.

    Haven't seen any php file (whatever that is ...... :) ...... ).

    Christer--Thanks for the comments.
Interesting. When I download tquinn's .zip file it deposits on my Desktop as
"attachment.php" which I would attach but WindowsBBS rules do not permit.
There are .php files, but I cannot understand most of it

    zip, not .php

I'm not sure where the .php came from. I uploaded it as a .zip, as described by Christer.

I checked another trouble site today, and it worked fine. So this solution is still valid.

I remember some time back going to some site and being prompted to download a java compiler before I could proceed. That probably was when this started. I don't remember the site, but apparently I already had MS's java installed, yet it still prompted to add Sun's Java (creating the problem).

FWIW, I have Sun Java and MS VM both installed, and they play together nicely. My IE settings are much more lax than I would ever tell someone else to set them, but I am a relatively "tame" surfer.

I had no problem with the zip attachment, either. Thanks for sharing your solution, Tquinn!

    Johanna,

Do You have both checked in Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet options > Advanced at the same time or either one or the other?

I have Sun Java checked in IE Tools Advanced, and in "set program defaults" in the CP I have "use my current VM" under the custom setting. Lucky for me, my comp seems to know what to do.

I only have Sun Java and I don't have more than one radio button for JVM (and of course, only one option in Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet options > Advanced). It seems like it would be possible to configure the use of Sun Java for some applications and Microsoft VM for other applications ...... ...... right?

One would certainly think so, and if you figure out how to do it, I would be interested in what you find out. Like I said, my comp seems to "know" what to use. I was using just Sun Java, but some web software I was trying out demanded MS VM, so I downloaded and installed it. The software quit complaining, and until it was mentioned here, I forgot all about it.
