When I open IE6, all I get is the message
"This page cannot be displayed" and all the suggestions about going into the
Control panel>Internet Options. At the bottom of the page is "Cannot find server or DNS Error" I was playing with Tweaking Toolbox XP but didn't notice the problem for several days as I rarely use IE6- 99% of the time NS7.
I can't tell all the solutions I tried so far, but evidently I missed one. Any help out there.?? Joe

joeskys--Is the problem only reaching your home page? Can you reach other Internet Sites? If "yes" to both, maybe your home page site is having a server problem? That usually clears up in a day or so. If you post the URL for your home page, we can try to access and report back.
If 'No" to both, post back. And tell us what version of Windows you use.
You may find some info here
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;241344
    http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers2.htm#secure_sites
(The word "authenticate" in the latter can often be translated as "reach ")
And there is the IE Repair Tool to consider

I have no problem with NS7, only when I open IE6, no matter what URL I type in.
I'm using XP. I looked in the MS -KB and they give many possible solutions.

joeskys--I understand you cannot reach any internet site with IE. What version of Windows are you using?
Have you tried the suggestions in those articles?
In addition, have you talked to your ISP? You may not have IE properly configured. I suggest you do not tell them all is OK with Netscape. That will help convince them the problem is at their end.
    ;)

    joeskys--
    1) Not sure i understand your comment about "could not copy explore.exe ". I do not see explore.exe mentioned in the references I provided. (That is the Windows Explorer command file anyway, not the Internet Explorer command file.)
    2) No, I would not uninstall/reinstall IE at this point. Rather do at least some of the things in that first reference above. (Like do you have a HOSTS file, what about disabling the firewall, etc.)
    3) Here is a test to determine if your IE connection to your ISP is working
"Open a DOS Window and see if you can ping the primary and/or alternate DNS servers maintained by your internet service provider (ISP):

At the DOS prompt ( C:\> or C:\WINDOWS> ) type ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx where the cursor is blinking.
The X's are the IP address. There may be one or two digits where you see three of them above. Then click "Enter ". "

If you get an error message or no indication that the PC reached the ISP (DOS should show a bunch of "Reply" messages) you have a TCP/IP connection problem.
    4) If you do not know the IP address for your ISP's servers, you probably are going to have to call them. So, once you are talking to them, explain the whole problem to them. If you are paying the ISP you should expect help.
    5) You could try the IE Repair Tool before you do this, but I do not think it is going to solve this problem. However, you have nothing to lose.

    Just asking... :)

but since joeskys says that his problem is only with IE 6.0 and not with NS7
then I'm wondering (for my own knowledge) how would it be a TCP/IP problem?

I'm wondering if he got IE trying to use Proxies, or tried to setup IE with the Internet Connection Wizard and enter some wrong info, or maybe something else in the "Connections" tab?

dobhar--Good question. That is why I suggested the "ping" test. If IE is not connecting then some connection setting in IE is presumably wrong. I do not use Netscape so do not know if it necessarily shares the connection settings with IE. And yes, the problem could be a Proxy setting. (I think that is mentioned in the first link I gave to joeskys above.)
joeskys--Have you contacted your ISP? Ideally they should be able to set up IE correctly for you. Mention the proxy setting issue to them. I do not know whether you use dial-up or broadband (cable/DSL) so cannot give you the exact location of the proxy settings. (They are accessed from IE Tools|Internet Options|Connection tab, but then you to to different places depending.) But regardless of their location, only the ISP knows what the correct setting is.

I think WelshJim is on the right track with calling the ISP, and I would only try the "repair IE" as a very last resort. The last time I did it, to correct a relatively minor problem, and carefully following the MSKB article instructions, I wound up with a "fatal system error" and wound up reinstalling XP!

You could go back to Tweaking Toolbox, too, and see if you inadvertently crippled IE. Might be an easy fix if you can undo what you did!

Thanks to all for the suggestions :)
My time here is limited so I could not get back to you all as soon as I would like.

I tried several suggestions - no help.
Next, the first one from Welshjim.

I tried to uninstall IE6 and also install over it but couldn't do either. I have a feeling either It's a virus or corrupted files.. Joe R

You say your OS is XP Ver 2002.

I have no idea what version that might be (XP is home and pro versions) but in any case, you cannot remove IE from XP. It's too tightly integrated into the OS and XP wouldn't work without it.

And could you please explain the thing that welshjim asked you about - I can't figure it out either.

    joeskys--

Again, many thanks to all for your suggestions. Hold on to your hat>
    I just blew mine off.

To make a long story short, in the add/remove I found "Internet Explorer
Q 832894" along with many other updates from MS updates. Why?? I
don't know, but I looked it up in
the MS KB. After a lot of reading, I downloaded it and installed it, with crossed fingers:rolleyes: , rebooted,
opened IE and up came my home page.

I'm sure most of you will understand
more than I did after reading about it-
    Q 832894. Now I'm going to have a
    couple scotch and waters.

joeskys--Items in the Add/Remove list are items that you have already installed on your PC.
But what works is all that matters. Enjoy! :)
Was this the first time you have rebooted since starting this post?

Welshjim and others: I've rebooted many times- The Q832894 in the Add/Remove
did not show any size. I might have
removed it and then put it back when I
restored. I can't remember the sequences after trying all the solutions.
Now it has a size of 3.48 MB. If anyone goes further and reads what Q 832894
is all about, please let us know.

joeskys--Well, you could go back to my original post and try some of the other suggestions. #1 might be to talk to your ISP.
And note the Caveats mentioned in the reference PeteC has posted. There also is a fix offered if that is the source of your problem.
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=831167
And I cannot remember whether any one has suggested )or you have tried) running scans for spyware and hijackers using AdAware, SpybotS&D or HiJackThis.
