AGGGGGGGHHHHHH. Well Guys and gals !!! Either I just messed too much ---or I have missed something . I have just recently noticed that when I go surfing for software , find what I want , start downloading ----then wanna go surfing again , The wind has gone from my sails , so to speak . Web pages load slower than a 7 year itch , and lord forbid that I should have more than 1 web page open at a time , or 2 downloads going. It takes FOREVER to get anywhere ---and I didn't seem to have that problem before I setup IE6. I have remarkably good download speeds for a 56k modem ( 8.75kb/Sec maintained ) on a regular basis, but it just seems that I have missed something that IE6 has changed from IE5.5 !!????? I had just as good of DL Speeds before , with good surfing time ---and now there is no breeze at all it seems !!!!:(

    Hi Dussman
Can you give us some system specs.....and do a fresh reboot......then a ctrl/alt/del and list for us what you have in the close programs dialogue box?

A download speed of 8.75kb/Sec is certainly rather fast for a dial-up connection (in fact, it's exceptionally fast!). Maybe it's simply the case that your ISP has limited the available bandwidth and you are now achieving only average (normal) connection speeds?

Have to agree with Brett - 8.75 KBS is one of if not about the best D/L speed I've ever heard of with dialup. As to general IE6 performance, first thought is to repair your installation - add remove programs - MS IE6 and tools - select repair option. Second thought is install AdAware and check for spyware. Daizey already has you looking for other running applications and the last resort is to edit your registry re: http 1.0 and 1.1 specs, but we'll wait on that one.

    ;)

This loads the System Tray icon used to change display settings, change the clock rate and memory speed for nVidia based graphics cards. This is unnecessary since you can easily configure these settings the way you want them in the Display Properties and not have to mess with them again.

    Stimon
If your scanner does not have a button to initiate scanning you don't need stimon. Even if it does have a button, you can still manually launch the scanning application. If unavailable via Start -> Programs, create your own shortcut. If your scanner needs this running to be recognised, start it manually first

Being that you're running dial-up..I'd make sure that the barest of necessities were running in the background.

As was pointed out by Brett and Rockster2U, you're speed isn't bad.

Dussman - nothing to do with your browsing issues but if you move the swap file to another drive/partition than c:\ you will get some performance improvement. Not huge probably since you have a nice amount of physical memory but there will be some and no downside.

    First Statement !

Well Guys --Like I said in my first post ----I have changed nothing from IE5.5 to now , myself ---So unless IE6 has -----and someone can show me why I should change any of my other system settings ------I'm gonna leave things as they are until I have the slowdown problem figured out . I have a Very , Very good Download speed and don't wanna lose it by changing something on a whim . It may be as simple as I will have to sacrafice the browsing speed for download speed with IE6 , and my system settigns as they are . But -----so far ---very selective troublshooting has given no solutions to my web pages loading very slowly when downloading . It just seems that all of IE's focus , right now , goes to downloading , and puts a low priority on loading a new web page .

    Sorry Dussman,
That was just my way of showing confusion. In the beginning you said you may have messed a little too much....then later you say you'd not touched anything. I was just lost. And still am at a loss as to what to suggest. Sorry for adding to the confusion.

    Thats ok !!!

Thats ok Daisy , I'm confussed too. I have only added IE6 to my system and had everything absolutly flying until then . I am just at a lose as to why my browser seems to slow down when downloading . I do not have anything different starting up with windows now , that I didn't have with IE5.5 and have not changed anything that links to my DUN since I have loaded IE6. I just catches me off guard that it would react so differently with this updated browser !!!:(

If you'd like to try and revert, why not dump IE6 and install 5.5 again. I've resisted every temptation MS has offered and stuck with 5.5, the extras are only bells and whistles.
I find my connection will slow to a crawl when in peak times I try to log on to the Hotmail server. Your ISP may give be giving you good speed on a single "download" connection, but balk at connecting with new servers with your surfing.
