I had a bad thing happen to my Windows XP a couple of weeks ago. After an attempted repair that was unsuccessful I did an upgrade/install from my original setup disk. Everything seemed to be working fine (except I had to reload a lot of my old software) until IE started freezing. I have all the updates from MS and I have even run SFC /scannow from the command prompt. Nothing has solved my problem.

Problem: I start IE and depending on what I'm doing it may happen immediately or later on. It is always the original window that is "not responding" meaning if I click on a link that opens another window it may or may not load all the way. But, the original window is the one that the task manager says is not responding. Sometimes I can just bring up the original window and click on the X and then have to click on "end now ". Other times I have to do a Ctrl-Alt-Del and bring up the task manager. I hope I don't have to do a re-install....thanks in advance.

Sorry you haven't received a reply. There a number of possibilities re your problem and without more details about your system(what caused the original problem that led to the re install)I am going to suggest that the most common cause for your problem is your video card.Check to see if you have the latest drivers, also you could go into properties and "turn" down with the slider your graphics accelerator. more detail here

    Ooops!

Jumped the gun! I thought my problem was solved but it isn't. I think I have narrowed it down to my user account. If I login into the machine as Administrator everything "appears" to be fine but I need to test if further.

My problem started when I was playing an online game. My machine hung (first time since the initial install Feb 2002). The only thing I could do was hit the reset button. After that the machine wouldn't boot. It complained that the \windows\system32\config\system file was either missing or corrupt. Couldn't get into windows to do a recovery from a previous system state so I had to try a repair/recover from the command console. That didn't work either. I tried to do a repair from the setup disk, that didn't work either. I found a system.sav in the same directory so I copied the "system" file to c:\ and copied the system.sav into system and rebooted. That allowed me to at least get into windows. My goal was to save My Documents and at least most of Documents and Settings for my account. When it was all over I had a registry with little knowledge of all my software. I had to reinstall most of it including all the updates from MS site. Since then my IE hangs...not sure what triggers it. I have also done numerous SFC /scannow's from the command console trying to repair IE. Didn't work.

    My machine:

WinXP Professional (all updates including the .NET update, I have the .NET update on my other two computers with no problems)
    Pentium III 550
    384 MRAM
NTFS on system disk (C Drive) , FAT32 on data disk (D drive)

Roxio 5 (with DirectCD) burner software.
Elsa Gladiac GeForce 2 (running NVidia 2183s with OpenGL)
    Office XP Professional
    Photoshop 7.0
    Bunch of gaming software.

Before this happened....all versions of my software were fine. My machine was super reliable. Please help.....thanks in advance.
