    Hi all!

I´m trying to assist a friend who has an old-ish computer with Win98. He started downloading IE6SP1 and since he has a phone line modem connection it should take four hours ...... needless to say, he aborted.

Is there a way for me, on XP Pro and broadband, to download the complete installation, burn to CD and give to him, to install on Win98?

Do I get the whole thing by downloading from this webpage
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/default.asp

or do I get a download taylored for XP Pro?

or do I just get the ½ meg which starts the "on-line" installation with the brunt of the download?

    Thanks for Your time,
    Christer

    IE's download only feature

If you want to download a version of Internet Explorer for a different operating system, if you use Windows 2000, or if you want to download an earlier version of Internet Explorer than is installed on the machine in question, follow the advice at this link:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q257249

An excellent step by step explanation of the procedure described in Q257249 (complete with pictures) can be found here:

    Hi Alice,
    thanks for Your reply!

I didn´t dare click download of the 479kB file in the second window from the one I gave a link. I was worried to start an on-line installation on top of my own and I didn´t want that to happen.

    Best regards,
    Christer

    Hi, Christer. You're most welcome.

Not for nothing but, there's another link on the webpage you mentioned: ''Order Internet Explorer 6 SP1 on CD ", which says:
"The CD is free, but the cost for shipping and handling is $5.00 US, plus tax; $7.50 CAN, plus tax. This offer is available only in the United States and Canada. "

I ordered IE5.5 that way. It came pretty quickly if I remember.

    Just a thought :)

Well, that has to remain a thought since I live in Sweden.

As I understand it, that option is to avoid long download times but that was no problem for me.
On my friends phone line modem it should take four hours to get it. On my broadband connection it took less than a minute ...... :D ...... for some 20 MB.

    Thanks again,
    Christer

    Hi Christer,

"or do I get a download taylored for XP Pro? "

The versions that are available for stand alone download are meant for non-XP OS's.

Can't install IE6 by itself on XP.

    Regards - charles

    Gotcha!

Too bad the location you list in your profile isn't showing up here any longer .. for example, my profile Location still shows "Jersey Shore USA ". but for some reason it doesn't dis[play any longer. I kind of liked seeing where people are from.

Good luck with the IE6sp1 download and CD creation for your friend.

Maybe I should mention that there´s the opportunity to choose which OS to be able to install to. There are four check boxes for Win98, WinME, WinNT and Win2K+WinXP. You can choose any and all, actual download size depending on your choice(s).

There´s one piece of confusing information on this webpage:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q257249

This is how the command line should look:

    /c: "ieXwzd.exe /d /s:" "#E "

    The confusing bit is this:

The " "<#e>" " value refers to the full path and name of the .exe file. Note that two pairs of double quotation marks must surround the path.

There should NOT be two pairs of double quotation marks at the end, only one pair.

Offered two possibilities I´ve always got a 90% chance of choosing the wrong one and I was rewarded by a "syntax error ".

    Hope someone is interested,
    Christer

    Alice,
thanks for the Good Luck wish!

It´s already done, downloading took one minute, burning took two minutes. I guess that beats UPS and the rest of them ...... ......

    Hi Charles!

As You can see in my previous post, there is an option for XP. It is however without the possibility to customize the install and it has to be done "the XP way ".

    From the MS webpage:

    Christer

    Good for you!

By the way, I was just wondering if you went by the instructions on the page at http://www.broomeman.com/support/wsiedown.html which say:

    2. Place the downloaded setup file here: C:\Downloads (Create this folder if necessary.)

    3. Click Start | Run and type the command below into the Open field (see screenshot below), and then click OK. NOTE: Use the EXACT syntax shown below, including the quotation marks. Copying the text below and pasting it into the Open field is recommended.

    "C:\Downloads\ie6setup.exe" /c: "ie6wzd.exe /d /s:" "#E "

    ===========end c/p=============

Then later on it tells you:

    5. After the setup routine begins, you will be given these two options (as shown below):

    (a) Choose the operating system(s) that you desire to use Internet Explorer with.

    =======end c/p============

Here you would select Windows 98 if you're installing on your friend's Win 98 machine - Right?

    Alice,
I had a look at that page and it was informative concerning what to expect during the download.

I also had a look at the MS page concerning Q257249 which provided the confusing piece of information.

The download engine suggested a folder "Installation Files For Windows Update" on my data partition D: and as long as it was on D:, I let it have its way. The folder was created automatically.
Once I have successfully installed IE6 on my friends computer, that folder will be history anyway.

    Christer

    Edited:

(When am I going to learn to read the whole post before replying ...... ...... )

Yes, I choose Win98 only. This download provides all files that could possibly be needed on any Win98 installation. The installer will detect which specific files that are needed in each case.

If all check boxes are ticked, then you´ll get a large size download which will cover any and all operating systems up to and including XP. The installer will detect which OS you´re on and will install the necessary stuff.

    Hi Christer,

Looked at your reference concerning IE6 for XP. Saw the "caveat" about the "core" browser being downloaded.

I'm a little puzzled by all this. Under what circumstances would one download a stripped down IE 6 on top of XP?

I was under the impression that if IE6 had to be repaired, one would use the install cd and then update thru the MS XP update site.

    What am I missing here?

As an aside, my understanding is that the stand alone IE6 is being "frozen" at its current SP1 state.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Charles!

I really don´t know what the pupose might be. My original question was to avoid installing IE6 again on top of everything.

If I remember correctly there was a mention in another thread about functions in "add/remove programs ". The option to repair IE should no longer be available which was a departure from Win9X and WinME practise.
The possibility to download and install the "core" browser on top of the old one in XP may be a substitute for the repair function.

It is also an indication that IE is more integrated in the OS than before, which was discussed in yet another thread.

    Charles, I´m sure that You´re not missing anything that I haven´t missed ...... ;) ......
