I can't get IE to view .txt files at all, and when I save them to my desktop and open them, they come up as garbled junk like this:

    C¯ªv-ÅÔÈ’ì\´WZ’-ƺ

Can anyone tell me how to fix this?

    Thanks people.

Text files are usually opened by notepad (by default) or wordpad if they are very large.

    Check you file associations:

Go to start->setting->folder options->click the file types tab
Scroll down to and click once "text document "
In file type details is there a program beside "opens with "?
if not click the edit button-
" The Edit File Type" window is displayed- in the "actions" box click open and then click the edit button below that-
The "Editing Action for type: Text Document" window comes up
In the box "Application used to perform action ",
    type in:
    C:\WINDOWS\NOTEPAD.EXE

This is assuming that windows is installed on drive c and your notepad.exe file is in the windows directory

    Hope this helps!

Try running the IE repair tool. Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>Internet Explorer and Internet Tools.

Also make sure you have the correct Content type (MIME) for the TXT - Notepad association. I show Content Type (Mime) - text/plain for my Text document filetype. What do you show? If it is blank, click the EDIT button and select text/plain from the drop down list (or type it in if you do not see it in the list).

You can also try the following:
-Select any text file on your hard drive (do a Find on *.TXT and pick one)
-Click it once so it is highlighted.
-Hold down the Shift key and right-click the txt file
-Select "open with" from the menu that apears and choose Notepad. If Notepad does not appear in the list, click "Other" and browse to C:\Windows\notepad.exe.

    Does that work?
