I had a BSOD incident a few days ago that resulted in my having to reinstall Win XP - Home Edition (check my WinXP forum thread "Computer won't boot" if you want to see the gory details). I had the Dell reinstall XP disk and did a reinstall, but it's pre-SP1, so I need to get SP2 for updates. Trouble is, IE 7.0 wouldn't open. I get the following error message: "The procedure entry point SHRegGetValueW could not be located in the dynamic link library SHLWAPI.DLL "

Thinking IE 7.0 might be too new, I installed IE 6.0. Same problem.

A Google search shows several items regarding that same error message. A couple of them referred to MS04-038 and KB834707 being a problem, especially after failed SP2 installs. Six of the latter show up when I do a system Search, but I'm reluctant to just delete files willy-nilly.

I have copies of the SP2 update file, both in C:\ and in F:\. When I try to install SP2, it goes through a lengthy operation but then backfires and uninstalls itself with the error message: "Service Pack 2 installation did not complete. Windows XP has been partially updated and may not work properly." I'll probably have to open a new thread in the WinXP forum to address that, but does anybody have ideas on how to get IE to open? The details of my system are in the signature, below.

Have you tried creating a slipstreamed CD? I think you can slipstream SP2 to a Dell XP recovery CD that doesn't contain previous service packs or Dell drivers on it.

Whiskeyman: Sorry to take so long to reply. I was away from home on jury duty all day.

No, I didn't do it that way. My Dell CD is the original reinstall disk, not a recovery disk. Is that what you meant to say?

I'm not sure how to combine the SP2 installation file with my WinXP disk. Suggestions?

When you get the updates, do Custom and don't let it do IE7.
