My daughter came home from vacation and could not log onto her Hotmail account. All that she gets is a blank page on the new computer. No problem on the old one.

I have secured IE on the new computer according to Infinisource "How To Surf the Internet more safely with IE (Windows XP Service Pack 2 version).

Is it possible that something I disabled is causing the problem? Can you help me fix the problem?
    Thanks

    IE 6.0.2900.2180-xpsp-sp2-rtm.040803-2158

    Hello Ann,

You can approach this in two ways:

Look at your IE settings and toggle them one by one, meaning you can take the settings that have been changed for high security and set them for prompt finding out which one(s) are too restrictive for hotmail.

Or, put hotmail in the trusted zone.

BTW, what firewall? Are you running a 3rd party brand or XP's? This may be a firewall issue.

    Regards - Charles

I had hotmail in the trusted sites and still was unable to get to their site.
I will change the settings in IE one by one and check as you suggested.

My firewall is TCP 2.0.15 and I am very new at this. I have the following denied on TPF:

Dialup (Nos)Level 3.net wants to send ICMP packet to your machine
Spooler subsystem App c:\windows\system32\spoolsv.exe UDP Out
Application Layer Gateway Service c:\windows\system32\alg.exe UDP In
Outgoing and incoming IP protocol 2 other-2 any application
Generic Host Process for win32servvices c:\windows\system32\svchost.exe

Could any of these being denied cause problems viewing pages? Or with Authentication?

I still cannot get to Hotmail. Anyone else care to share some thoughts on what I can do. I did get to Hotmail page on the old computer, but the new one just keeps showing a blank page. Thanks in advance.

    Hello Ann,

Did you try allowing the these thru the Firewall?

Spooler subsystem App c:\windows\system32\spoolsv.exe UDP Out

Application Layer Gateway Service c:\windows\system32\alg.exe UDP In

Outgoing and incoming IP protocol 2 other-2 any application

Generic Host Process for win32servvices c:\windows\system32\svchost.exe

They are MS processes - part of XP, and not malware of any sort.

    Regards - Charles

I thought that you had solved my problem. However, I permitted the things you suggested which were denied, BUT, I still cannot get into Hotmail. Nothing but a blank page. Any other suggestions?????

    Hi Ann,

Lets try to pin this down and use XP's firewall instead of yours. BTW, what firewall are you running?

Disable your firewall and use XP's. If you have SP2 installed, go to the control panel > security center. It should start up after you disable yours unless you turned the firewall service off. Enable windows firewall logging: go to the advanced tab of WF and in the security logging section > settings check log dropped packets and click on "save as ". The log C:\WINDOWS\pfirewall.log will open with Notepad.

If SP2 is not installed, then the pre SP2 version - ICF - should be enabled in XP services.

And of course you do all this while disconnected from the Net.

    Regards - Charles

Boy do I feel embarrassed! I had hotmail.com in the trusted sites, but neglected to add the hotmail login page to the trusted sites. It finally dawned on me yesterday and viola no problems.
I have printed out your instructions, in case I ever need them. BTW, I use TPF and I always err on the side of caution when allowing or denying something.

Thank you so much for your help.

Ann , thanks very much for the feedback. The next time I run into this, your follow up will be a big help in knowing what questions to ask.
