I was on a website and 4-5 other windows popped up. After closing all the ads and other junk that was flashing before me, I noticed that when I now open IE 6, it opens to full screen, but I can no longer use the middle button in the upper right corner of the window to shrink down the window size. How do I restore this feature?

    Try F11 on the keyboard.

I hate those pop up windows!!! ARGGGG

Especially the one that comes up full screen with no windo bars or anything, the only way to close it is with ALT+F4

    Thanks for the replys....but

It didn't work. F11 maximizes the viewing area, but I still can't make the screen to shrink to half size.

What happens if you right click on the icon in the taskbar and choose restore? Still trying to figure out just what exactly it is you're looking at here. Can you see the taskbar or anything at all besides the window or is it just a full screen IE window with no way of getting out? If so it sounds as though it's running in kiosk mode. If this is the case alt + f4 should close it. Doe's it start this way every time you use it? If so, check the properties of the shortcut you're using to start it and see if there's a "-k" at the end of it. If so remove it. Most likely it won't have it but you never know.

    Zander,
What I am trying to explain is this:
As when all new windows open, IE no exception, you get 3 square boxes in the upper right corner....left = minimize, right = close, and the middle button = ....shrink to smaller window. When I click on the middle button, the picture in the box changes, but the accual size of the window does not. It remains a full-size window, as when I first opened Explorer.
My question is, where is the setting that determines what size the window will shrink to, when the middle button is pressed?
I hope that better explains it....sorry!
Again, it was working fine, until I went onto a website that had a ton of pop-up windows that started popping up all over. When I finally stamped them all out, closed IE, and came back in, I could no longer use the middle button to shrink down the window to a smaller size.

It appears from the explanation of your problem that your window was maximized or resized manually. When you click on the center button you should see either one square, which means the window was resized manually, or two squares with one overlapping the other, which means the window is being viewed in maximized mode. When a window has been resized or maximimized manually clicking on this button does nothing other then change the look of the button, because there is nothing more for the button to do, the window is already maximized.

To change back, click on the center button so that only one square is shown. Now look at the lower right hand corner of the screen. You will notice that it has several angled lines. Move your mouse down there and you will notice that your cursor turns into a double sided arrow. Click on this area and drag left and up until you resize the window the way you want.

    Hope this helps. :)

Well, I think I understand now. Click on the boxes and then see if you can drag the window down to the size you want. If so, make it the size you want and then close the window. Then open IE and try it again. I've run into this myself from time to time and it's always been a case of the small window size being the same size as a maximized window so it appears that nothing happens when you try to make it small.

Guess Rod beat me to it. Oh well, I'll leave this so the effort wasn't wasted. :)

    Way Cool Guys!

I feel kind of silly, with such an easy fix. Just one of those frustrating things, I guess. Thanks so much....again, for taking the time on a silly and kind of meaningless post!

You're welcome, glad we could help. :)

As for feeling silly, don't worry about it. Looking to others for help is what this BBS is here for. Sometimes what it takes is for someone else to look at a problem from a fresh prospective to find the solution, and as the old saying goes "The only stupid question is the one that isn't asked. "

    :D
