I'm working on my cousin's computer. I removed a couple viruses and a load of spyware. Currently I'm trying to run windows update. When I go to the windows update website it says my security settings doesn't allow the execution of ActiveX objects. I've turned the settings all the way down to low, I've added the website to trusted sites. Anything else I can do?

Beboh --Ater setting the over all settings to Low, did you check the individual ActiveX settings to be sure they are at Prompt or Enable in both Internet and Trusted Sites?

    Hello Beboh,

I've turned the settings all the way down to low, I've added the website to trusted sites.

Not getting MS updates has nothing to do with with the Security Settings Slider - medium is fine and has to do with cookie behavior. Recommend turning back to at least medium afterwards.

    Per Jim's advice:

In the Internet options > Security tab > Custom level: scroll down to "Run ActiveX Control and Plugins ". The first option is Admin approved - either enable for Admin or prompt. Afterwards you can go back to disable or prompt.

This is the ONLY ActiveX category that MS needs to "diddle" your system. The others can remain disabled.

    Regards - Charles

I've enabled the Run ActiveX Control and Plugins option, and restarted the browser and I still get the error message that my security settings don't allow the execution of ActiveX plugins/objects/controls. I don't remember the exact wording.

Beboh--Was there a yellow band across the top of the screen (just under the Address Line)? Did it offer you any alternatives or even Help to overcome the problem?
Also I feel there are times when I have been told that ActiveX controls had to run but that the real problem was either a firewall or a popup blocker. Have you tried disabling them? And if your cousin has recently installed SP2, there may be two firewalls to disable.
One way to disable a popup blocker is to hold down Control when you click to access a site.
Do any of these fixes seem to offer help

No Yellow bar. I tried several things in microsofts help section. This computer has serious issues. First things I noticed when I first started working on the comp was notepad.exe was missing as well as windows media player. When I originally tried to get into windows update I tried to reinstall IE6 SP1, it keeps popping up telling me this program has not passed the windows logo test to verify it's compatibility with windows xp. This software will not be installed contact your system administrator. And it won't install it. I manually downloaded servicepack 1a network install and express. It tells me it cannot verify the integrity of update.inf and make sure the cryptographic service is running and it is. So I think I'm going to talk to my cousin and say hey I'm going to back up all your **** and wipe this stupid thing out. Could a virus have done this? McAfee removed several, but I didn't take note as to what they were. I use winxp at work (linux & win2k at home) and my wife uses winxp here at home and I've never had a problem like this before. win2k never gave me fits like this. Sorry I'm just kind of ranting and raving right now. I'm going to go try some other things before wiping it all out.

Have you looked at the reference I supplied in my earlier post?
For example, it offers a fix for "When installing an update you receive the following message: "Software you are installing has not passed Windows Logo testing" "
The CatRoot2 problem is a common one.
But it would not hurt to scan the PC with a spyware detector just for general maintenance.
