Will you please clarify- are you offline completely, or do only IE/OE not work? Is your ISP AOL? Did you do anything significant before it quit working? Have you tried calling the ISP? Removing or disabling the firewall, even to troubleshoot, is seldom a good idea, as it often introduces more problems from the lack of protection. What firewall were you using?

I've come across several PC with this similar problem but both are running XP. One has AOL installed and was able to connect in my workshop using an ADSL connection on my network, but when I try to dial up using a standard modem IE dipslays Page not found or soemthing similar.

I've tried all sorts and have resorted to reinstalling which seems to work so far but I want to know what to look out for if (more likely WHEN) it occurs again.

I have a second PC that has no AOL connectin at all and IE does not access any pages at all on ADSL or dial-up.

This one really has me stumped, anyone got any ideas????

To try the simplest thing first on the system that has no connection:

In Control Panel>Internet Options>Connections tab>Setup button, run through the wizard to remind IE which connection to use. OE shares those settings with IE.

If that doesn't work, the next thing to suspect is spyware; specifically, the possibility that spyware has altered the winsock LSP chain. Repairs to that can usually be made by downloading LSPFix, copying it onto the affected computer (it'll fit on a floppy), and running it.

If that fixes things, scanning for and removing spyware with Spybot and/or Ad-Aware would be the next thing I'd do.
