    Hello everyone!

Don't know how long this may have been "missing ", but I noticed it today when trying to access it.

All other functions under the Help tab seem to work ok, but nothing appears when I click on the "help>contents and index ". Thought I would try and read up on some of the information that would be provided there, but sort of difficult to do when I can't (or don't know how) to even access it? :(

No other problems (that I am aware of) with my computer, just wanted to do some reading (and hopefully learning!) :)

I am using IE/OE (ver. 5.00.3314.2101). Any information/suggestions on how I can fix or find this (without having to upgrade to IE6) as I'm still getting used to using IE5

    Thanks to all,

    Vicki

Have you tried letting IE repair itself? Read this for an explanation of the process. When you get that site page, click on the menu at the left, on Installing IE5 and it will open another menu, click Auto-Repair and you'll see the process outlined.

Also, to search the archives on this BB, click on the Search button at the top right hand side of this thread, scroll up if needed. That will allow you to type a search word/words in and view some past threads about your problem. Most thing have been covered, some several times.

    Cheers. :)

    No luck...

Thank you, Zephyr, for responding to my question. I did try the add/remove>repair option as you suggested, but without any luck. Still no help> "contents and index" showing up.

I also looked at that link you sent (thank you!). Alot of information there, including the use of the add/remove/repair option. I also tried searching for further help there, but wasn't able to find what I need to fix this problem?

I did try using the search function on this web board, but I always seem to have trouble finding the right word/words to use  I wasn't even able to find my original post using that feature! (do to the wording of my search I presume?)

Thanks again for your willingness and trying to assist, it is greatly appreciated!

    Sincerely,
    Vicki

Let me ask, Vicki. Are you using the browser Help dropdown? If you click on that, do you get a dropdown list with "Contents and index" and "Tip of the day" etc. on it?

If you get a window open that says "Microsoft Internet Explorer" at the top, click on options and show tabs.

Vicki--If Bmoore1129's excellent suggestion does not help, you might think more seriously about updating your version of IE to at least 5.5 SP2. (I think that includes a new batch of Help files. )
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/Top10.asp
And then you should go to Windows Update and get whatever other critical patches are offered.

    Somewhat confused....

...but for the most part, that's my natural state of mind! :)

This is as far as I've gone before I mess anything else up:

"Are you using the browser Help dropdown? If you click on that, do you get a dropdown list with "Contents and index" and "Tip of the day" etc. on it?" Yes, I am using the browser dropdown, all other functions/options on there appear to work okay, just not the one with the "contents and index ".

Here is where I am confused:

"If you get a window open that says "Microsoft Internet Explorer" at the top, click on options and show tabs." I'm not sure where that is located? How do I get a window open that says that? (MIE)

I'm not sure I even remember how I d/l the IE5 version  ....but might consider going to the 5.5 SP2 if I can't resolve this issue? I tend to be paranoid trying to add/update something to this computer when I'm not sure if it's working right in the first place.

Once again, I thank you all for your patience in trying to help me!

    Sincerely,
    Vicki

Vicki--I have IE6 so perhaps things are different for you. When I click IE Help|Contents and Index, I get a window that is divided into two parts. The left side shows 4 tabs--Contents, Index, Search and Favorites. Do you have that left side? (If you have the right side only--no tabs, you can recognize it by a colorful heading "Getting started with Internet Explorer ".)
If no left side, then do what Bmoore1129 suggested. If yes, then you/we will have to look for some other solution.

Thanks for picking me up, Jim. I drop off every day at 3PM central so I don't see anything until the next morning.

I also have IE6sp1 and I would recommend to you, Vicki, that you go ahead and upgrade. It will take a little of getting used to but there is no advantage to doing 5.5 and then upgrading. I would also recommend that you DL to your HD and install in Safe Mode, then clean up temps, scan disk and defrag. I think the experience will be much better. I got the disk from MS for $10 shipping and then put it on my HD. It installs faster that way.

    Good Luck:)

    "leave well enough alone... "

Was the advice my husband gave me! :D I maybe should have listened to him???? (as he knows even less than I do about computers!)

I did "bite the bullet" and d/l IE5.5 SP2 and critical updates (hopefully) as was previously suggested prior to the last message from Bmoore1129, but maybe should have kept it (the bullet) and used it elsewhere??

I spent many hours trying to get this thing up and running properly (after recieving received several errors) and it had wiped off alot of the shortcuts I had on my desktop. But so far, I have been able to manage to get everything somewhat back to normal, or at least what appears to be normal for me! :)

I'm sure that most users most don't have as much trouble as I do when d/l or installing stuff, as I'm sure it's because I must be doing something wrong, or not understanding completely what I should be doing? (I had cleared temp. internet files, disabled NAV, paused task scheduler prior to d/l) but didn't download in safe mode(?) so maybe that's where I went wrong?????

Don't know that I want to try to install (or download) IE6 just yet! But will keep the idea in mind!

By the way....the help>contents and index dropdown is working, but whew, what I had to do to get there! :D

Thanks again to everyone for offering your advice and suggestions! Without a doubt, I'll be back again! ;)

    Sincerely,
    Vicki

    Glad you got it working.

You will have better success with installations if you download the file to your HD. Then clean up Temp internet files and get rid of the temps from you windows/temp folder. Do a scandisk and defrag. Then shut down and reboot into safe mode and go to your downloaded file and dbl click on the executable (.exe). The install will go much better because there are no other programs or drivers running to interfere. Then shut down (power off) and boot up twice. Then get rid of temps and defrag again. Now you're ready to use the program.;)
