In IE internet options there is a place to allow 3rd party browser extensions.
What exactly does that mean? Do I need it enabled for any particular software? Nod 32, Spyware blaster? I do have several Add ons enabled in manage add ons. Is an add on like a third party browser extension? Is there a security risk having allow 3rd party browser extensions?

Also, what effect does enabling personalized favourite menu do?

    Windows XP SP2 Home edition.

Typical third party browser extensions are .....

    RoboForm Toolbar
    Spybot S & D Configuration
    Sun Java Console
    Add to Trusted Zone
    Add to Restricted Zone
    Favourites Search

as well as some standard IE extensions....

    Diagnose Connection Problems
    Fill Forms
    Offline
    Research

Those you have will be listed in Manage Add-ons if you have Enable 3rd Party Browser Extensions enabled.

By default the option is ON - AFAIK - Browser extensions from known sources are safe.

I don't have allow 3rd party browser extensions checked off but I do have
some listed as enabled. These must have asked to be enabled when installed.
    Eg ssvhelper,diag connection problem,sunjava,ie spell,ie spell options.

For more information open up IE Help and hit the Search tab - type in Browser extensions > List topics > How do browser add-ons affect my computer > Related Topics > Web browser add-ons, what you need to know.

I looked at the list: Add-ons that run without requiring permission. Some of the ones I have running, like IE spell check are enabled, are not on the without requiring permission list, so the add on must have asked permisson to be enabled when installed. Right?
