IE fails to launch intermittently, requiring a restart and sometimes a "hard stop" to set things right again. It will run just fine for a while after the hard stop. Sometimes the Start>turn off computer>restart command sequence does not work which then requires the hard stop. I have emptied the temp file, scanned for viruses with Norton, emptied the cookies folder, run Spy bot and Ad Aware, defragemented the drive. I am using WinXP Pro on a Toshiba laptop. All the IE updates have been downloaded and installed as far as I can tell. Any suggestions would be greeted with a :) . Thanks. Jack

First port of call would be a Repair of IE, although I feel that here might be something else awry.

    Repair IE/OE

You did update Ad-aware and Spybot reference files before running them? Not that I think it is a problem that they will resolve.

    1. start~run~cmd followed by chkdsk /r and when it tells you it can't do the deed right now, agree that doing it at next boot is a good idea then boot.

    2. When it is back up after #1, start~run~sfc /scannow (note the space between sfc and /) and OK. You will need your install CD in the drive most likely.
