    HI,

a friend of mine is having problems opening his Internet explorer 6 which is running under a windows XP OS. It gives him the normal windows xp error report when he tries to open it. now i tried everything from clearing the history, cookies, program files,etc....scandisk, virus scan, to try to rteinstalling it. now for XP since its the default browser and cannot be removed in add or remove option in control panel, only the patch can be. i tried to reinstall it, i dled from microsft the installer and then i ran it, but it gave me an error saying i already have the newer version. so i went to the registry and edited the value to 0 so it wont ask me that. so it started dling, and eventually completed the installation. then i restarted and reopened Internet explorer, and TAADDAAAA!!!! THE ERROR IS STILL THERE!!!! i have looked at some posts concerning some IE errors, and seen that System info>>IE Repair, but as i've seen many say...i couldnt find that option anywhere. so if any1 knows a solution on how to fix this plz respond asap...Thank u.......oh and if some how some way IE doesnt work, think i should install a different browser liek netscape?

Have you tried running Spybot, Ad-aware and Cwshredder? - may seem irrelevant, but has been known to work in the past.

BTW - IE Repair does not exist with IE 6/XP - you followed the correct route.

You are quite right - my post was not clear at all :( - I was inferring that the Repair function to be found under Add/Remove Programs and Sys Info for IE with other flavours of Windows is absent under IE 6/XP.

I have used the methods you posted - and they work.

Glad IE6 XP repair worked for you, PeteC, but after that "Fatal System Error" I received trying to repair a relatively minor problem, I wouldn't try that again without making sure that all my back ups were up to date. Though I printed and followed the MSKB instructions exactly, I not only crashed the comp, I ran into a brick wall, resulting in a reinstall of XP. Based on that experience, attempting a repair of IE in XP would be my absolute last resort before a clean install.

dna2k3- how about installing IE6 overtop of the "broken" one?

Can't say that I know exactly what that is, but maybe your friend needs a Winsock fix.(direct download)
