IE causes Reboot and again and again...

since recent problems, including trying to use "encrypted magic folders" (locked up--lost data--working with co. to restore), many programs related to microsoft cause the computer to reboot when trying to access...

these include, but are not limited to, starting ie, downloading things from microsoft, etc.

when i am saving a file and try to change anything (folder, path) it shuts down whichever program i am saving from (mozilla, aol)...

i have windows xp, avg antivirus, ad-aware, spycleaner, norton firewall, and blackice protection...could the two firewalls together be the problem??...is zone alarm better??

To answer part of your question - more than one firewall shouldn't cause the problems you are seeing but it also is a complication you really don't need. Blackice is a great firewall. Little harder to configure than some but probably as good as it gets.

Now if you are running more than one AV program, that can cause lots of problems.

 

If you have AVG's Control Center loading on startup, shut it down as soon as the computer is through booting. See if the problems continue.

I've encountered two computers in the last few days that were exhibiting symptoms similiar to the ones you're experiencing. By shutting down programs one at a time, I found the culprit to be AVG's Control Center. The actual AVG program itself wasn't causing any problems; just the Control Center part of it.

You can also turn off the rebooting part which should then give you a blue screen if it crashes. The blue screen may then give you some information to help identify where the problem is.

To turn that feature off, right click on My Computer, go to Properties (or Control Panel>System gets you to the same place). Go to the Advanced tab, then the Settings button in the Startup and Recovery section. Uncheck "Automatically restart," click OK.

 

Worth mentioning that "EMF" or the "Encripted Magic Folders" program could also still be what's ailing XP.

I don't know a thing about this program but I did have a peek at what the support site had to offer. I didn't find much, a scanty faq page, followed by an email support option. The faq's do leave one with the impression that there's a good possibility that Norton Firewall and other software and hardware, "unnamed/unknown/or_as_yet_undiscovered" could give this api fits or vis-versa.

There may be unistall problems or driver dregs that could also be problematic. I'm sure you've seen this but here's the link anyway, (others may be interested):

I don't know what your history was with this program, what kind of problems you had, or what you may have done to now consider them fixed but it may help others to have a more complete picture of what the possibilities or complications may be.

That being said and after turing off or adjusting your "reboot on error/memory dump" setting as so wisely suggested by Miz. Do you have any history of errors in your event viewer that may shed some light on your current problem?
