I am being inundated with pop-up ads that auto-launch Internet Explorer even when I am not running IE. The IE windows are titled either "IE - Internet Explorer" or "IE - Counter ". I have tried running Spybot, and deleting cookies, but the problem persists. Any help is appreciated, regarding how I can put an end to this problem. I am running IE 6.0.2800.1106 under Windows98 2E. Thanks in advance.

    Hi Greg -Welcome :)

Assume you are connected to the net when all this happens?

Run Spybot - delete all it finds

then run AdAware and delete all it finds. Always run AdAware AFTER Spybot

Get a Firewall, if you haven't already got one, and if you have, get a better one. Kerio Personal Firewall seems to come well recommended and is free, although I am happy with Zone Alarm Pro.

Run a full virus check - preferably on-line at, say
    Housecall

Download Pop-Up Stopper and give it a try.

Hope something here solves the problem.

    Hi Pete,

thanks for your response. I have run Spybot, and at your suggestion AdAware, I ran a complete system scan using McAfee with current virus defs (came back clean), and am now running ZoneAlarm (freeware version, not Pro). I am still getting the pop ups that appear to be generated external to my own IE activity, so I assume there must be some kind of script or EXE that is auto launching. I thought perhaps Spybot would ferret this out, if it invovled a registry key, but apparently not. Any further suggestions are appreciated, thanks

    Greg

Update -- the offending host behind the unwanted ads appears to be www.trafficbuster.net. Can I configure IE or Zone Alarm to block this URL or its IP address?

i'll come back to you in the morning - Zone Alarm (free) is on my other PC - and I think it can be done in IE.

Too tired to think at the moment !

    This is a Browser hijack.

You already have the tools to kill this, look in the start menu SpyBot and execute the icon that says advanced. Then go to tools and look in BHOs, Browser pages, Hosts file, processes and System startup.

Remove all items pertaining to this item.

    Additionally D/L and use

    Greg,

Go with Mike - hijacking is a very grey area for me and one I had not thought of :(

FYI - to block cookies, etc from a particular site in IE 6

Tools > Internet Options > Security > Restricted Sites > Sites > 'Add this web site ....'
