Son bought a new Persario SR2010NX. He ask me to get get it protected before going on internet. Set up a new admin account and installed AVG free, Kerio. I successfully installed 52 of 53 MS updates. The 53rd updates is IE 7.0. When I run MS updates or IE 7 local install exe, the same results ...
no screen errors, just says IE 7.0 failed to install. The following is from the IE 7 install log .....
HP wants to revert back to shipped configuration and start over. Computer works fine, IE 6 works fine, just can not get XP to accept IE 7.
Will be away from computer fpr 3 to 5 hours, but will respond to all questions, solutions.
    Thanks

IE 7 is a big installation. Did you disable ALL your anti-virus and anti-spam software before you attempted the install? These programs could prevent the install from writing to your registry - which your log seems to indicate has failed.

Member ackerberg is correct that the installation cannot write to the registry as it wants.

    Reading list:
    http://msdn2.microsoft.com/ie/Aa740486
    http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/10/11/IE7-Installation-and-Anti_2D00_Malware-Applications.aspx

Your installation Guidebook should be: http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install

I have written extensively on this issue when the above approach fails:

    http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=22447
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=59082

The nearly last posts in the thread linked just above shows how to use Microsoft PSS to let them fix the issue. Support calls for IE7 related issues are free of charge. Microsoft PSS information can be found in my first link above.

    Hi Bill

Sorry to say, but your fix (http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=22447 thread) continues to default to same error values in my ie7.log
This has occurred in Admin/owner account (password) and new Admin2 account (no password). As a last resort, I created Admin3 account while in Admin2 safemode (I created Admin3 in safemode to prevent XP / IE6 from creating any user preferences). Log on/off, restarted into Safemode/network Admin3, ran fix_reg.cmd, restarted in SafeMode and ran local IE7 install.exe (stored on USB drive). All of my attempts refer to same error in ie7.log ...............
    verifying registry permissions. ERROR: 0x80070005
    and
    update.exe extended error code = 0x3f5
Any suggestions would be most welcome.
Would any information from ie7_main.log be of any value?
Would doing a destructive restore (HP's routine to return C: drive back to day of delivery) be of any value? This latter approach would knock out a number of hours of work, but not going forward is a show stopper.
    Thanks

Attempted another IE7 install joining two approaches.
    Created new Admin4, login/out.
REBOOT - restart in Safe mode/network

Loaded msconfig, changed the following .....
    General Tab/Selective Startup/Load System Services/Original Boot INI
Services Tab/Hide all MS services/Disable all
REBOOT - restart in Safe mode/network

    Ran Bill's ran fix_reg.cmd
REBOOT - restart in Safe mode/network

    Ran ie7 local install
Install incomplete - same ie7.log error values.

    Thanks ackerberg
It would appear my problem is not KB91925 related. My installs allows run to the end, no hang ups or not responding. I was hoping it would not come to manual registry changes. Would be nice if full instructions were in English. If / when I try that approach, I would try it in my primary Admin account ... if fails, create another new one.
    Thanks

Use Microsoft PSS, the support is free for IE 7.
They have two new little utilites that Sandi and I both want but will not let us public link.

They will sort your issue in less than ten minutes.

Made the call, assigned a case number, talked to tech, ie7 install log proved a repeating issue (error code = 0x3f5). Downloaded 1st utility program, directed to a URL to run 2nd utility. Crunched some numbers, rebooted to Safemode/network, ran install, rebooted, worked PERFECT.
One phone call - problem solved - priceless :)
What I don't understand is why MS is keeping this simple fix under wraps. I can only assume it may cause problems if run on a computer that does NOT have error code 0x3f5.

    Thought that would work.

I am not sure why it is "under wraps ", but it is not because it would harm a computer without the error issue.

There is nothing sinister about it, but the utilities use a DACL editor that could also be used malicously.

As a note to all, I have substantially revised my thoughts on this issue based on this and many other comments. Please see my thoughts here: http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=22447 I identify the five most common reasons for "Access Denied" failures during an IE 7 installation, and their fixes.

    Best,
